i dont get glorioustrainwrecks

i actually think glorioustrainwrecks is a lot of fun. i enjoy doing some silly game every once a month yet i think it could be way more fun if people interacted more.
dont hate me for this but why dont people really comment on the games? i am always impressed by the ammount of games that are made for the events. a lot of nice and entertaining stuff and EVERYONE DOES A GREAT JOB!
but why don't we really talk about them?

dont get me wrong- this is not about me or my crap but i kind of miss some conversation about the whole events. like people submit their games and mostly they get uncommented and then that was it until next month while i think it would be way more fun if everyone was chatting and interacted with each other.

maybe i am the only one thinking like that - i mean overall i tend to try to comment on a bunch of games to get conversations started and maybe it is just my chatty nature and people who make games rather make games and keep quite.

i dont know.

i was just wondering.

also why are there always TWO events going on nearly at the same time?

the whole month there is nothing going on and then suddenly on saturday its klik of the month klik and just the next day its already klik of the month ball.

so its like one weekened of the month is trainwreck weekend. whats up with that also?

please dont take this personal and hate me for saying something that might look negative - i wouldnt even start such a topic if i didnt like this place.

I think the Ladies'

I think the Ladies' Aux...Ball is there mostly because KotM is inconvenient in some time zones. They are together because LAKotMB is basically just an alternate time to do KotM.

As for why we don't comment much... harder to answer. For me, it's partly the games tend to speak for themselves pretty well and I just don't have a lot to say about them, partly because I often end up coming back the next day to play everyone else's games and talking about those games just isn't timely anymore, and partly because there's not much of other folks talking to respond to!

You can always hang out in irc (which I somehow always forget about)!

Hey

Would you be interested in starting the second Klipart Konundrum? I chose the sprites to use last time, so it'd be nice to have someone else do it for a change (and it would probably also be more challenging for me since I don't know what to expect ahead of time).

It's a good point. Too often

It's a good point.
Too often a KotMK can be a "write only activity"... I'm not sure why. For me:

Sometimes I'm just shagged out after what I made up (esp. if it ran into overtime)

Sometimes there are technical issues -- the machine I tend to want to code on can't run the old KNP stuff natively, and I've never worked at streamlining the process.

Some months I went and purposefully made a comment on EVERY KotMK game -- then I started to get a little overwhelmed by the #s, though it feels like the tide has receded a bit.

As for the once-a-month-nature, I kind of dig that. I'm always so perpetually time crunched that it's not always easy to carve out a time, and a regular, not-TOO-often excuse to just put everything else aside for a bit is welcome. (Though lately I've started bringing a laptop on the T to code up stuff in 20 minute spurts-- I'm making a sequel to my 2009 advent calendar http://kirkjerk.com/java/advent2009/ too ;-)

So I dunno what the answer is to drive us to a more feedback-y culture.

Is there a technical solution? Could we start giving out badges or awards for # of feedbacky comments given? (yeah yeah I know, "gamification" is so damn 2010) Of course, then you need to consider meta-moderation, making sure people aren't just putting in too many "great!" style comments just to crank that up... or maybe I'm over thinking it and underestimating the camaraderie and politeness potential that is here anyway.

First of all I am happy to

First of all I am happy to hear that people agree with me. I am not for awards or stuff. People should post if they feel like posting. I don't want to force replies out of people. My problem is often: I finish a game, then its 4am for me (GMT + 1/ CET) and I'm super tired but just stay in irc because I know that's the only chance for me to hear what people think of my game. Yet I'm slowing falling asleep at my PC waiting for a reply.

The whole comment thing is just a mental thing I guess. If we all think we should comment more we should just do it.

What we could do is show how many posts a user has like pretty much every other forum and give custom user tags depending on reviews or forum posts a user made or something. Like I don't funny user tags like "cnc232.dll" or something nerdy and click related. I really don't know yet.

Also providing graphics for the next Klipart Konundrum? Hell yeah sure why not when is it?

Also I guess its great both events are once a month - if you didn't finish your thing on Saturday you don't have to hold back and can still post it on Sunday if its finished by then. Great idea :)

The IRC thing is a really

The IRC thing is a really good point -- most games get some amount of feedback in the IRC channel, and it's always awesome to watch people react to your game as they play it. I generally can't stick around after I make my game, but I'm connected to the channel all the time, and logging, and I'll usually go back the next day and read what people said. It's always been at the back of my mind to put the chat logs online where everyone can browse them after the event is over. I should look at doing that more seriously.

I don't know if EffBee has strong feelings about when to schedule the Klipart Konundrum in particular, but I might as well mention that anyone can post events, scheduled at whatever time they like, and generally people seem to show up if they're interested and awake. I'm always happy to see members of the community making their own excuses to make games :)

Anyway, yeah, thanks for caring about this place, and identifying an important thing that we could be doing better to encourage people to make stuff.

As long as it's on a

As long as it's on a Saturday, it's cool.

I think Klik of the Month Klub was more social when we posted the games inside the comments section of events rather than using the Add Game functionality. However, Add Game does a better job of organizing everything, and it's easier to go through and grab the games. Is there a way we can combine the best of both worlds?

Like duplicate the comments

Like duplicate the comments from the game's page under their entry on the KOTM page (and vice versa)? That sounds good.

I wonder if the amount of discussion is largely related to this being a small community, and largely one who has little time to spend here. I try to comment on anything I have some sort of useful thought about, but I often save a bunch of games and never get the time to play them.

edit
And perhaps notifications when a comment's been posted on a game one's made, or requested to be notified of. (For people who don't use RSS)
