A Prototype

Last night I had, what I thought was, an interesting idea for a puzzle-platform game. It's a 2D playfield with multiple plains, resulting in a pseudo-3D environment. Since you can't really tell what is going on in the snapshot, here is a Youtube video of the prototype in action:

It's probably obvious that I haven't spent any time on graphics... I wanted to see how interesting the idea would play out before I spent too much time on it. It's still too early to know if the game will be much fun. I think with some good stage design, it could be kind of interesting.

Starting out, I kept the colors different enough so that testing would be easier. red is the foreground platform, yellow the middle platorm, and blue the background platform. Up/Down hops from one color platform to another. Left/Right moves the character accordingly. The Ctrl makes your character jump.

As of now, there is only one incomplete stage - there's no way to win! The collectables (only obtainable from a platform with the coinciding color) were just added to give the tester an objective. I may add three more plains.

I like it. there could be

I like it. there could be some real mind bender puzzles there, I think.

It reminds me a bit of those enclosed glass two-sided maze marble labyrinth games,

There is a major collision

There is a major collision detection bug that needs to be squashed before I go much further. I have a few ideas I need to try...

Here is a new video with a music selection I thought might suit the game:

I dunno how old school you

I dunno how old school you are, but there's something very Atari 2600 Adventure like in the way the player is a block that changes color to reflect the current "room" - or in this case, layer.

The music is spot on too.

I wonder if a two player game would work well like this... I'm not sure how the "layer control" would work (taking turns or what) and if the players could shoot each other or just try to send each other to the bottom of the screen. It might be just too chaotic. Anyway, just thinking aloud.

I'm a huge Atari fan, but

I'm a huge Atari fan, but believe it or not... I never really played Adventure until last year sometime. I'm not very good at the game and the bat pisses me off! :D

I like your idea of a 2-player mode. I might add something like that eventually if I continue developing this.

Okay, I'm going to post this up for you guys to try out. There still isn't a full stage to complete or anything, but I have fixed (I think) the major collision bug, and added a few things based on some suggestions I got in a chatroom.

left/right cursors - moves left/right (ooh, innovation!)
shift key - jump
up/down cursors - changes plane (will not change if an obstacle on the plane you are changing to is in your way)
+ key - resize window
- key - resize window

Some ideas I'm tossing around:

trampolines, keys, ladders, doors... etc. All of the regular platformer stuff except only accessible from a plane with the coinciding color. I was thinking about adding three more planes, but I may hold off on that for now. I played around a bit with having the planes scroll parallax style... with some funny results. I may try that again.

Just now, I changed it so that when you collect the red square, the screen flips upside-down! Evil! It's quite difficult to play upside-down. I don't know if this will stay in or not, but I rather like it. :D I may post a video on youtube of that later.

(added a stretching effect to the flip)

Ideas, suggestions, and criticism are welcome. As you guys know, I rarely finish anything... I doubt this will be an exception. I just like to have fun making junk.

This looks totally badass.

This looks totally badass. If the colour-themed Eegra game-makin' shindig wasn't ending today, I'd suggest you submit it.
