Holidays 2008

So, is something special going to happen this December issue of Klik of the Month? I think it should. Even though I'll be pretty busy, but I hope I can make it.

Any ideas?

Above: an image of the Xbox Adaptive Controller.

I'm a bit elated by having one of my games featured in this Xbox Adaptive Controller showcase. I'm channelling that enthusiasm into a small event!

I find designing simple one-button games extremely satisfying and would encourage others to try it, but I'm not setting any requirements on what should qualify for this event. Focus on different kinds of accessibility if you want!

Thanks to gisbrecht for suggesting I mention Game Accessibility Guidelines, an incredible resource. Particularly relevant are the suggestion to avoid button mashing and offer an alternative to holding down buttons.

Lamers?

I'm trying to figure out if Lamers is ambitious enough to fit under our definition of a glorious trainwreck, or if it's sufficient for your game to be ridiculous.

Lamers, of course, is a parody of Lemmings in which little people wander around aimlessly, occasionally stacking blocks like Builder lemmings, and it is your job to kill them before they reach the goal. I've always found it strangely compelling despite the fact that it lasts all of ten minutes (which is merciful, since that's about as long as the joke stays funny). The final stage is a pretty good example of not letting yourself get caged in by your game mechanics, though.

Gavin on Mars

gavin on mars.jpg
Game File:

'A monkey named Gavin has to ride a horse or a unicorn into a castle. Gavin lives on Mars and wears a crown. He is playing games and stuff in the castle. The name of the game is "Gavin on Mars." (Courtesy Eric, age 4)'

A Kickstarter request. I tried to keep the difficulty down in the hope that Eric might play it. There's a wee dedication to him if you press the 'E' key on the last screen.
