the thrill of a space

as i've been making my stupid maze game (in which i make rooms largely at random) i've discovered the game is actually About something: the perversion of being in a space.

"perversion" not in a strictly sexual sense, but as in a thrill you get from doing something illicit. you feel like a tresspasser in this game, constantly teasing barriers and boundaries but never going too far.

from my view as the designer, i can see that the map is constructed of constant near-misses, the game world on the verge of shattering the illusion irreperably. in this way it kind of is like sexual tease, i can never outright tell you that this is a game, how it was constructed, that this was all done largely for fun and randomly, but i can hint at it constantly, show you the space around it.

barthes drew a distinction between "readerly" and "writerly" books, he would sometimes cut up pages from a book and rearrange them at random to make them writerly.

this is the art of games as toys. it never needed to justify its existence in the first place. i'm glad i'm making this stupid juvenile pointless game.
