the legend of zelda: breath of the wild (2017)

"Open World" games are the current "hot" thing in video games right now. these games are vast, have massive budgets and take years to make. but I believe that they can be made within weeks, on a budget of $0.

far cry

the goal of the open-world jam is to make one of these games. what defines an open-world game? well it's very loosely defined. but here's some things
- large map with lots of points of interest
- back of the game box would describe it as "vast" or "a massive game world" or such
- a continuous space with no load times (YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO THIS PART IF YOU DON'T WANT)
- lots of "collectables" and "items"

see how much of the player's time you can fill with as little effort as possible. maybe some procedurally generated content? maybe some large, sparse expanses?

FAQ:

Q: is yume nikki an "open world game"?
A: yes

Q: what if I can't make a world that big?
A: you can make it very small, it's allowed

Q: is [game] an open world game?
A: let's just say yes

Q: may I submit an unfinished game?
A: all open world games are unfinished in some way, so yes

feel free to play fast and loose with the concept. now go! out! into the world!

For this 5-year lifespan, an new console was made for use. But it didn't have any games. So you will decided to make some games for the fictional console.

Screens for this console can handle 3. Normal, XL and XXL.
Normal = 500x400px
XL = 1000x600px
XXL = 1600x880px

It only handles 8-bit music and sound.

It can be used for Windows, Mac OS and Linux

And that is it for that little fictional console.

the legend of zelda: breath of the wild (2017)

Normal = 500x400px
XL = 1000x600px
XXL = 1600x880px

It only handles 8-bit music and sound.

It can be used for Windows, Mac OS and Linux

And that is it for that little fictional console.

(what the heck is sharecart?)

4 years ago minus 1 month there were messages in altgamez...

suddenly out of nowhere the sharecart jam became a REALITY..... how did this occur?? the only way to defeat the sharecart jam and send it back to the hypothetical realm is to make a sharecart game within a measly 365 days.. good luck...

sharecart is a thing where games made with sharecart have a specific save file structure that is compatible with all other sharecart games, even though the data therein is not necessarily interpreted the same... which is part of the fun. play one game and have it save, then use that same save file on another game and see whatever effect it might have. this page explains it better than we can.

sharecart module for lua and love2d: https://github.com/alts/sharecart.lua
if you're using luajit/love2d you may want to take a look at the bitop module to make the most use out of misc0-3 (16 bits per misc)

(also, mapX and mapY holding up to 1024 values is a lot if you interpret them to refer to individual rooms (e.g. a zelda-like or knytt-like game), especially if you want higher values of mapX/mapY from other sharecart games to do something in your game... will you procedurally generate 1024x1024 rooms? will you have rooms outside of the defined map boundaries be random noise? will you cause invalid room values to point to a random valid room value when loaded? perhaps mapX and mapY correspond to tiles? will invalid mapX/mapYs simply cause the game to say "invalid save data"? or is there a much more sensible possibility entirely that we missed???)

for some pre-existing sharecart games see teacart 1k complete (a neat free bundle w/ a loader and "reset cart" functionality attached), the itch.io sharecart1000 tag (some overlap with teacart), and whatever games are still up on the official-i-think sharecart site

For this 5-year lifespan, an new console was made for use. But it didn't have any games. So you will decided to make some games for the fictional console.

Screens for this console can handle 3. Normal, XL and XXL.
Normal = 500x400px
XL = 1000x600px
XXL = 1600x880px

(also, mapX and mapY holding up to 1024 values is a lot if you interpret them to refer to individual rooms (e.g. a zelda-like or knytt-like game), especially if you want higher values of mapX/mapY from other sharecart games to do something in your game... will you procedurally generate 1024x1024 rooms? will you have rooms outside of the defined map boundaries be random noise? will you cause invalid room values to point to a random valid room value when loaded? perhaps mapX and mapY correspond to tiles? will invalid mapX/mapYs simply cause the game to say "invalid save data"? or is there a much more sensible possibility entirely that we missed???)

for some pre-existing sharecart games see teacart 1k complete (a neat free bundle w/ a loader and "reset cart" functionality attached), the itch.io sharecart1000 tag (some overlap with teacart), and whatever games are still up on the official-i-think sharecart site

the legend of zelda: breath of the wild (2017)
