Bowser, I Love You.

Bowser, I Love You
KoopaTroop909 ||| Review by Mariken S.
Here’s a queer one- and I mean that in the most literal sense of homosexuality. Bowser, I Love You is a fan game of the Super Mario franchise which concerns the turtle-like nemesis of Mario in a more romantic spotlight than usual. That is, the usual is a vague, cartoonish approximation of heterosexuality; a grim parody of Saint George and the Dragon. The Princess is kidnapped by the turtle-dragon named Bowser, and Super Mario promptly vanquishes the villain in the scope of about an hour. Revisionist fairy tales love to focus on the maligned monsters, and now such a trend has come to the sphere of computer games! In the pseudonymous nature of the internet, the creator of this game calls himself “KoopaTroop909”, the word Koopa is in fact the name of Bowser’s henchmen and his name in the Japanese editions of the Super Mario Bros. games. Clearly, this man is devoted to Bowser even in his choice of username.
The usage of the first person pronoun in the title clearly invokes a most intimate sentiment. Yet, who is the pronoun referring to: the player avatar who is thankfully not Mario or to the creator of the game, our dear KoopaTroop909? There is the titular confession at the beginning of the quest, yes, but this does not cancel out the maker’s sentiments as well. Could the hero of the story not feel genuine affection for the tyrant turtle? I suppose putting the player’s sentiments into the hero could create something to that effect. It is a well known fact that games of a production caliber not up to snuff are often played simply to gawk and mock at it by performative players. We ought to assume good faith of a hypothetical player and their assumed concern of Bowser.
The game begins with a mockery of Super Mario, Blaurio, making his way to the castle of the villain. He proclaims his unending devotion and love to Bowser with a bouquet of flowers. The King, in shock, comically sets the flowers and Blaurio alight! He accuses the hero character of being a spy for Mario, to which the hero refuses. Yet, outside the text of the game, the creator KoopaTroop909 serves this character in a roundabout manner. Even in a game where Mario is antagonized, he is still there! He is a prefabrication of what many people believe to be computer games, an easy semiotic so to speak. It is free advertising anytime he is inserted into a game, there is no escape. Regardless of this, Bowser demands the decapitated head of Mario— a quite un-Nintendo proposition. Blaurio agrees and sets off on an adventure.
The actual game play is of little interest. It functions as one would expect a Super Mario game to be: you jump, you squash and you die! Thankfully there are only four worlds with three levels apiece, if there were any more I think I would have given up. There is a nice touch being that instead of turtles, you face the bumbling servants of Princess Toadstool named Toad en masse. Anyone learned of this fiction’s setting (which is a surprising amount of people given the statistics of the Super Mario Wiki) knows that the turtles and brown mushrooms are the underlings of Bowser and thus it would be illogical for the player to fight them. The green dinosaur Yoshi is a halfway point boss who lobs green eggs at the player, thankfully it was not too difficult. The final world is a peaceful white and red castle in which the dreadful Mario inhabits. Blaurio faces off against Mario in a surprisingly and annoyingly difficult battle. At the end of the battle, the axe seen at the concluding levels of the original Super Mario Bros is used in a fantastic fashion that can probably be inferred from the previous paragraph. Suffice to write, Bowser reciprocates Blaurio’s love.
The credits say the usual— Nintendo’s ever-present dominion on copyright and giving thanks to all the people who extracted artwork from the computer games in a presumably illicit manner. The one unusual thing is KoopaTroop909 describing his intimidation with other men, his blooming bisexuality and his entryway through the love of Bowser, the turtle king. It is a small piece of the whole game but I think it is what makes it worth playing. It’s a sort of real life to virtual life connection, on how the two can influence and metamorphose each other. I give much praise to KoopaTroop909 for this odd little gem.

RuPaul's Glamorously Trainwrecked: Train Drag Wreck Race

Before we begin!

Whilst researching some background info for this week's game I managed to stumble upon a youtube account by the name of Bollera-of-Fire2. They have ripped and archived the entire RPGTTDWR soundtrack (and even some SFX) on their channel. A big kudos to them for doing so!! So before we start this retro deep dive, I'd suggest you start the following playlist in the background and listen to it whilst reading on. Perusing those lost tunes really gives you the chills!!! ❄❄⛄

♪ Link: Chilly BGM ♫

Now onto the main show!!

Howdy my dearest bishies, boshies and other creatures of the night. Welcome to another longplay retro review by yours truly spideRcBoy98!! Now, this month I've got something really special cooked up for you!!! Some backstory: About a year ago in early May I was visiting this flea market with my nan (she went around there regularly cause she was into occult tapestry and stuff) and there was this one booth set up with boxes full of old computer games. So... as you know me... I was rummaging around at this booth for like 20 minutes or so and just as I was about to give up I found this little packaged gem hidden at the bottom of one of the boxes!! I don't want to keep you in suspense too long, this week we will be taking a look at:

RuPaul's Glamorously Trainwrecked: Train Drag Wreck Race

Or as it was going to be called in the Region 5 market: The Glamorous Trainwrecking of RuPaul's Dragged Locomotive Adventure III (I know, the numbering scheme is a hot mess!!)

So, what's all this then?

RuPaul's Glamorously Trainwrecked: Train Drag Wreck Race (which I will be abbreviating as RPGTTDWR for obvious reasons) was an in-development title for the then-failing Bell Lab's Inferno operating system and was coded up by the infamous Mantellisoft Studios, with the game itself being scheduled for release by Infolutrix sometime in the fall of 1997.

A lot has already been said on the downfall of Mantellisoft. Some say it was due to skyrocketing costs for the research and development of their unique (and Inferno-exclusive) Holotype Laser Disk format. Some say they were taking too much of a gamble with increasingly lustrous IP tie-in deals. Whatever it was, RPGTTDWR would be the last game of theirs to be ever shown publicly: At COMDEX '96, just three months prior to them filing bankruptcy in February of 1997 (a devastating event that the Inferno system family would never recover from, paving the way for the later generations of 3D-capable home consoles).

Getting messy...

Not much remains of the RPGTTDWR enterprise, a couple of magazine scans showing blurry screenshots and the unbelievable tales from those who were present for their COMDEX live unveiling. Well... and of course one other thing... the handful of demo disks that they gave away to the journalists at said live event!! By means that I can't even begin to fathom, one of those disks (including intact case and cover-art!!) has found it's way into my solder- and shareware-palace. Let's see what we can salvage...

Uff! Dumping the disk with the InferNeroX tool you really get a feel for what a disaster the development process must have been!!

With some tinkering I was able to get the COMDEX demo up and running, as you can see in the screenshot above. Funnily enough there seems to be
some debug stuff left in the level data although even with a fully controllable camera none of it is interactive. From what has been pieced together of the demo footage and what I can try out myself, the game would have been somewhat akin to Activision's Dragster for the Atari 2600, albeit with a fully explorable open world and a shop system.

Some unusual findings!!

This is something I've not seen previously in any of the demo footage. It appears to be from a not-yet-implemented tutorial for a "multi-incarnation-traintrack" mechanic. From what I understand of the text, you can place tracks along one vector of spacetime and then have them bend back onto themselves in order to solve a puzzle that requires your train to be in multiple places and/or moments in time simultaneously.

This is a piece of what I think is an FMV intro video. The rest of the video parts appear to be missing (they probably deleted them for the demo disk because they hadn't yet figured out a better compression system for video. This part must have been left over by accident)... And I'm afraid that's all that I could find so far.

And where does this leave us...?

Maybe I will revisit this little headscratcher sometime again if I ever find the time to do so. But to be honest, making heads or tails of what little there is of the debug tool and demo files would probably take years. As it stands, Mantellisoft wrote their epitaph not with a whisper but with a glamorous kapow!! I hope you all enjoyed this trip into the obscure aetherworlds of retro software history, it's been a doozie... And I also do hope that you join me again next month when we will be taking a look at the never-localized SNES classic shoot-em-up 鉄男IV - The Amalgam Man!!

although com’s neural matter is ceased, this reconstruction appears to present commune units, sub-dwellings, store houses, street zones, skree zones, and other living units popular around the time between the first and second Great Crisi within northeast midlantic. the home zones appear to demonstrate the latest trends in building of its time, from camuoflage dazzle -spec to smart slime technology at a time when comrades had to rapidly adapt to the chaos of enviro-breakdown and there was a rise in intentional coliving collectives and their need to build environmentally-resistant and adaptive living units.

at this point the original p-wave material sleep systems has not been entirely reconstructed and calibrated. while the software is owned by the museum, the compression codec from that era has not yet been located. in the meantime, please enjoy this series of rendered dwell-units from home zonez88 of comrade 186345218, recovered from a physical storage device when such technology existed, and saved as playable zonez-files. the scanfiles showing an individual are believed to be of comrade 186345218.

Sonic's Youth: Game Design Document

Game design document for a Sonic game I'd like to make.

It's a GOOGLE DOC that you can read here.
It's a work in progress, I will add to it every so often (drawings, writing, maybe some audio stuff).
This is not a joke like 'Sonic Dreams Collection'.
"People that like Sonic are weird."
Fuck you well to do popular award winning 'cool' LA assholes.

It sucks thinking about these snobby "indy elites" making fun of the thing that makes some people happy.

Why is this a train wreck or why is this on this website?
I figure if I try to make something super sincere like this it will accidentally be transcendentally bad.
Like, it's kind of uncool to be a fan of something? I guess it depends on how you look at it?
I guess some questions I will be asking myself while adding to this is, like, how reverent am I to Sonic as a "franchise".
I like Sonic, I liked him as a kid quite a bit.

Someone on the IRC for this website years ago said Sega would never hire me to direct a Sonic game. I guess, in this person's eyes, this game design document and the theoretical game is a trainwreck in terms of futility, like this is never going to happen.

I once was working at a smoothie place and my first or second day there, this guy was telling me about his Simpsons spec-script and how much he was working on it. Him telling me about this made me feel tremendously sad at the time being stuck working for very little money serving very rich people overpriced smoothies. Like, I would hope that this guy made it, I have a more positive look at these things these days. At least he wrote it, he did a bunch of comedy stuff in the city, he was trying and that's what you have to do, you can't just sit around and mope about, he was taking some sort of action even if this action to others felt futile.

So, whatever, I'm going to do this anyways.
I'll run head first into a wall hundreds of times to see if I can run through it.

MYCOTERROR ]|[ UNOFFICIAL WALKTHROUGH

You've been stuck on this boss for hours. Maybe you're missing something? You thought you were just too tired last night, but still lost when you tried again this morning - it just dragged it out longer.

It's almost time for work, but maybe you can just branch off a guide and read it on your commute...

---

Originally wrote this for the speculation jam over on itch.io, and a friend mentioned that it happened to be a good fit for this event too!

Ghost Mumps Episode 2 Historical Documents

------

hey MS, sorry for the slow response. I've been crawling through a somewhat scrambled backup of mnet, saved right before the big crash! Remember that? The new 'nets are so much better.. nad yeah so, I'm hoping to preserve as much of the platform as possible. people sure liked to talk a lot on it! can you imagine if I just let this stuff rot, like the mnet founders did?

anyways, I came across the title of a game for the MunsterBox I don't think you've ever featured on your site! I figured you'd be interested, so I retrieved everything I could that mentions it, which unfortunately amount to just three posts. and some of the data is corrupted, blah, of course. btut I'll let you know if anything more happens to turn up!

xuder out

------

Fictional Games jam entry #2

This result from a search engine is now the only record of a fictional entry for Fictional Games jam that I posted yesterday and later deleted. This is my new entry for Fictional Games jam. So I've either won Fictional Games jam or I'm very confused. Or both. Or neither.

The Benefits of Using Multiple Ice Machines

A game about the American opioid crisis.

---

Opioids are substances that act on opioid receptors to produce morphine-like effects.[2] Medically they are primarily used for pain relief, including anesthesia.[3] Other medical uses include suppression of diarrhea, replacement therapy for opioid use disorder, reversing opioid overdose, suppressing cough,[3] as well as for executions in the United States. Extremely potent opioids such as carfentanil are only approved for veterinary use.[4][5][6] Opioids are also frequently used non-medically for their euphoric effects or to prevent withdrawal.[7]

---

A game inspired by my darkest fears, that of the american prison system, and that of my father's wrath.
