Pirate Kart V: The 2012-in-one Glorious Developers Konference Kollection!!!

02/25/2012 - 00:00
03/05/2012 - 00:00
Etc/GMT-8

So this Saturday was SUPPOSED to be the Timezone Lottery Klik Jam. But who can think of jamming for only two hours on a separate event when GDC IS NEXT WEEK!?

SO LET'S USE THIS WEEKEND TO MAKE THE PIRATE KART EVEN MORE MASSIVE!!

LET'S DO

Pirate* Kart V: The 2012**-in-one Glorious Developers Konference Kollection!!!
(*games not pirated. **will not contain 2012 games. unless it does)

It's happening RIGHT NOW!
The deadline is: NO DEADLINE JUST KEEP MAKING GAMES!!!
The launcher will continue to download games even while AT GDC!!!
Click the giant green button to sign-up/submit your game!

Want to try out the launcher before GDC? Get it HERE!

Q. What is this?

We're making loads of awesome and/or terrible games and taking them to GDC to blow minds with them! Over the weekend of February 25th-26th, everyone is invited to make as many games as they can and submit them here! After the event is over, we will package the games up into a launcher like we did with previous Pirate Karts! And then this March we will be showing them off in a kiosk at the Game Developer's Conference!!!

The kiosk will even continue to download games while on the show floor!

Q. Who can participate?

ANYONE! EVERYONE! If you or anyone you know makes games, or even just has an interest in making games, we would love to have you all participate! If you've never made a game before, we think Klik & Play is pretty easy to learn! but any tool is allowed and there are lots of great ones out there!

Q. What are the rules? What kind of games are allowed?

The Pirate Kode has only one firm rule: If the rules are getting in the way of you making games, disregard them! To put it another way: Cheating is encouraged.
But we have some guidelines for you if you want some direction!

  • Try to make each game in 2 hours or less! Don't worry if you go over, though. And feel free to prepare as much as you want ahead of time. Art, music, game ideas, even code!
  • Unlike the recent IGF Pirate Kart, with this one we're looking for games made for this event specifically!
  • It's a good idea to include what the controls are on the title screen! Unfortunately you can't really count on people actually reading the game description!
  • It's also really nice if people can exit the games by hitting escape.
  • If you don't stick to these guidelines, that's okay! WE WANT YOU AND YOUR GAMES ANYWAY!

Q. THIS IS AWESOME! HOW DO I PARTICIPATE?

Get yourself comfortable with some development environment, then when Pirate Kart Weekend arrives, MAKE GAMES LIKE CRAZY!!!

Q. I MADE A GAME(S)! HOW DO I SUBMIT IT/THEM?

SWEET! First, sign up for a Glorious Trainwrecks account if you haven't yet (you can do that here). Then click this, fill in the form, upload a game and a screenshot and submit and then YOUR GAME IS IN THE KART!

Q. Weren't you asking for money?

It got fully moneyed on Kickstarter!

Q. Where are the game ideas people gave as Kickstarter rewards?

Right here! There are THIRTY games that need to get made! If you could update that spreadsheet as you start working on them and with the link when you finish, we can hopefully avoid overlap and Mike will be able to contact folks when their games are made!

Q. I want to make a game, but can't code!

No prob! There is a lot of free tools for your game-making needs!

Klik n' Play is the classic. Outdated, limited, buggy and absolutely wonderful for churning masses games.
Construct 2 uses HTML5 and you can create a nifty on-line game.
Official Hamster Republic RPG Construction Engine
Scratch (converter to standalone exe files: http://chirp.scratchr.org/dl/ChirpCompiler-setup.exe
Stencyl Creates iOS and Flash games!
Oh! My! Game!
BYOND (simple programming language)
Novashell (script-based)
The Scrolling Game Development Kit
The Scrolling Game Development Kit 2
Adventure Game Studio
Game Maker Lite
Ray Game Designer II
ZGameEditor
Processing
MegaZeux
ZZT
Unity 3D

Making games isn't just for programmers!

Q. How can I hang out and chat with everybody?
We have an IRC channel! More info on that here!
You can also post right here on this event page! Or leave a comment on a game page!

IGF thing

So uh Twitter is exploding right now with the suggestion that some sort of pirate kart-like compilation be thrown together at the last possible second to enter the IGF.

If you want in on that, email games to mike at meyermike dot com. The IGF deadline is this Sunday at like midnight PST or something. I presume ExciteMike will need time to throw games in. I dunno. Perhaps he'll post.

THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO ENTER THE IGF!!! MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE <3

Klik of the Month Klub #50

08/20/2011 - 16:00
08/20/2011 - 18:00
Etc/GMT-7

HOLY SHIT WE'VE BEEN KLIKKING FOR FIFTY MONTHS! WOOOOOOOOOOO PARTYYYY

The Klik of the Month Klub meets right here on this very website on the third Saturday of every month at 4pm Pacific Time (taking daylight savings into consideration) for a two hour Klik & Play Showdown. Everyone who participates gets two hours to create something from scratch in Klik & Play. Abusing the stock objects is encouraged. If you really loathe Klik & Play you can use whatever game development platform you want. Two hours is a pretty tight time limit, though, so choose wisely!

Klik & Play is absolutely free to download, and learning it takes minutes, so everyone can get in on the action.

Want to talk to your fellow Klikwreckers? Join us on IRC -- server irc.freenode.net, channel #glorioustrainwrecks. We've also got a Mumble voice chat server -- just connect to glorioustrainwrecks.com using Mumble and you can talk to us like real human beings! Join the mayhem!

After you've made your game, you should upload it here!

Troubleshooting FAQ

  1. Bad Pirate won't run!
Yes, sorry, the zip that Dock uploaded doesn't have all the data to run it, and I didn't catch this before release. You can play Bad Pirate online in your browser here.
  2. Collect the Umbrellas won't run!
This can be fixed by replacing "kartconfig.lua" in your Kart directory with this version.
  3. No Klik & Play games will run! I get some error about not being able to run a 16-bit program or something.
If you are using a 64-bit computer, which is fairly likely these days, Klik & Play games may not work directly. See our page about running Klik & Play games on 64-bit computers for help.
  4. Some Klik & Play games won't run, but others will!
It's been reported that some games refuse to run in 16-bit colour mode. Try switching to 32-bit colour.

The 529-in-1 Klik & Play Pirate Kart II: Kart Harder Appreciation Thread

FIVE HUNDRED TWENTY NINE.

You lovely, lovely people. Congratulations to you all.

If my SQL-fu is correct, there were 102 of you who contributed to this beautiful thing. That's nearly as many people as the last Pirate Kart had games. 50 of you contributors signed up for the site less than a day before it started. That's amazing. I can't thank everyone enough. Some of your work is astonishing, some of your work is terrible, and all of your work is appreciated. Be proud.

If you haven't already, please post a bio for inclusion in the Pirate Kart compilation. You don't have to give your real name, or a real picture of yourself, or anything -- though you can, if you like. It's simply what will show up as an "about the author" when the player clicks on your game(s) in the menu. Feel free to have fun with it. Have a peek at the existing bios for inspiration, if you like.

I've heard a lot of people asking when the compilation will be ready. The answer is, probably within a couple of weeks. The menu rewrite is going smoothly; I'm hoping to go from "ugly and unusable" to "thematically-appropriately ugly and borderline usable". Those of you who have ever booted up a Windows 95 shareware CD-ROM will understand what I'm going for.

A few people have asked how they can help. The best way to help, in general, is to play some games, comment on them, and mark your favourites. You may have noticed an "Add to favorites" link at the bottom of each game; when you like a game a lot, click it! Not only can people see which games you like by clicking on your user name, but I'll be able to incorporate this information into the compilation menu, providing a roadmap to the unmissable gems scattered within the daunting truckload of games that is the Pirate Kart.

Once again: Thank you all for making games and being a part of this remarkable event! I hope many of the newcomers stick around and make some more games with us for the March Klik of the Month Klub.

THE 371-IN-1 KLIK & PLAY PIRATE KART II: KLIK HARDER

02/27/2010 - 00:00
03/01/2010 - 00:00
Etc/GMT-8

Holy shitfire, it's...

THE 371-IN-1 KLIK & PLAY PIRATE KART II: KLIK HARDER

FEB 27-28, 2010

Q: What is a Klik & Play Pirate Kart?

A Klik & Play Pirate Kart is a staggering collection of awesome and/or terrible games. All of the games are made in a single 48-hour period. No game is allowed to take more than two hours to make. Contributors continuously churn out games, non-stop, all weekend. When the weekend is over, the result is pure glory. It is an experience unlike anything else that has ever occurred on earth.

Q: Why 371 games?

In 2009, the Global Game Jam brought together more than 1600 people for a single 48 hour period, and the result was a measly 370 games. What a joke! If we had had 1600 people working on the first Pirate Kart, why, we could have easily produced 10,000 games! Glorious Trainwrecks Dot Com is hereby declaring QUANTITY WAR on the Global Game Jam.

Q: Who can contribute?

EVERYONE! Tell your friends! Tell your enemies! Tell your grandmother(s)! Our community has grown since the original Pirate
Kart, but 371 games in a single weekend is still an absurd goal, and we need all of the help we can muster. Luckily, anyone can learn Klik &
Play
, and thus anyone can make games with us.

Q: How do I participate?

  1. Step 1: Get set up and comfortable with a rapid game creation environment. I recommend Klik & Play, but if you've got a 64-bit machine, you might be better of with, say, Construct. Check out our Tools thread for suggestions.

Remember: you want to make games at an impossible rate, spending no more than two hours apiece on them. Getting some practice in during the Klik of the Month Klub would be a good idea.

  2. Step 2: When the weekend has begun, join us on IRC. Everyone who's participating should be in the #glorioustrainwrecks channel on irc.freenode.net. Chatting with us on IRC gets you speedy Klik & Play advice, insights into the creative process, and new friends to make games with.

If you're not comfortable with IRC, we've set up a handy-dandy IRC Java applet that automatically connects you to your game-making brethren.

  3. Step 3: MAKE GAMES LIKE A MAD(WO)MAN.

Q: How do I see the games people have made for the Pirate Kart?

An automatically generated list of games will be available at this link.

IT IS TIME ONCE AGAIN TO TAKE THE IMPOSSIBLE PLUNGE INTO GLORY!

JUSTICEWARD!!
