Beeping DCs

There is one thing that's been confusing me ever since the Dreamcast's launch - why do our Dreamcasts 'beep'? People were discussing this on Digitiser (a popular teletext page), until somebody went, "It's not your DCs that are beeping - it's the VM thingy telling you the batteries are low". So how come my Dreamcast beeped before I even had a VMU? It still does it now, in fact. I'm not sure about other countries, but european DCs seem to beep whenever it's recognised a game's security code - on the intro screen (when the spiral makes itself), and on the Audio CD / VMU screen (it says 'checking disc'... and beeps). The scary part is, once a method of 'disc-swapping' is sussed out (I had an idea myself, but it involved a saw, so I ain't gonna be trying it ;>), it'll be so easy everyone will be able to do it - just swap the discs over when you heaar the 'beep'. This will lead to the DC being plagued by piracy, and _another_ failure for Sega. Oh dear... BTW, Sega haven't made any comments on this, despite being asked by numerous people ("Look, it's the Goodyear blimp!"). I wonder why?

Also of mild interest is the fact that copies of Soul Calibur (no matter what version) all seem to make 'clicking' sounds when you play them (on the Character Select screen, and whilst actually playing - as reported in DC-UK.). The only solution to this is to turn the TV up while you play...
