Inspired by this.

From now until the start of Pirate Kart V, we're gonna collaborate on a single level, and then submit it to the Kart! Some rules/guidelines:

  1. Each participant takes turns making a section of the level
  2. Only one section per participant
  3. Make your section between ten and twenty screens long (more of a guideline really)
  4. Try not to spend more than two hours on your section
  5. Please don't edit someone else's section (unless you have a really good idea)
  6. Add a sign message to your first screen stating that you made the section
  7. First person should start the level off with the Run and Climb abilities. Feel free to introduce the other abilities but try to be gradual about it.
  8. When you've finished your section, upload it as a packed file.
  9. Whoever is working on the next section should say so, just so that we don't have two people trying to make section X and thus conflicting with each other.

Submit WIP versions as an attachment to COMMENTS, not as a new game. The final version will get submitted as a game entry to PKV but WIP versions as game entries will just clutter up the database.

I will be out for most of today, so probably not me. If nobody takes it by tonight, though, I'll probably start it.

Draknek's picture

I really want to take part

I really want to take part in this! Just learnt how the editor works yesterday in preparation.

Would prefer not to start it off, but I will do if no one else has by the time I get some free time.

sergiocornaga's picture

I don't want to start it

I don't want to start it either... I was really looking forward to expanding on the ideas of others, but if nobody else volunteers in the next 2-3 hours I'll bite the bullet and attempt to kick things off.

EDIT: OK, I've started on a level! I foolishly decided to spend most of my two hours making pretty custom graphics and now I've run out of time to work on it today, having left a few of my screens incomplete. Not a great start, but expect the beginnings of a level to be uploaded tomorrow.

sergiocornaga's picture

Yeah, Woo!

We have a beginning! Pretty sure I went way over two hours attempting to make everything as pretty as possible, but it's here now.

Notes for future contributors:

  • So far the level pretty much fits the environmental category, but there's no need to stick with this.
  • I included a custom tileset with signs of various colours if anyone wants to use them to introduce their area (but don't feel obligated to keep using my tileset!)
  • I added a couple of inaccessible 'secret' parts to my area in case it becomes possible to backtrack to it possessing extra powers.
So, who's up next?

Sorry this is taking so

Sorry this is taking so long! I've always been pretty slow. I'll see if I can finish this by lunch.

Edit: Aaaaand I'm done. Took way longer than I expected.

Things I have done:
-Made a little town area, which expands some of the backstory for the ruins area.
-Replaced tilsesets 7 and 8.
-Added a little tune, "Mayor of Dubtown" by Feeble the Mighty (Ambi track 25)
-Added a bit of intrigue, and heavily implied a mine area (if you don't want to make a mine, don't worry, it's mostly there for flavor.)

Double edit: Oh, and I added two cutscenes as secrets.

Argh! The level editor is crashing when I try to compress the level. Hang on while I try to fix this.

Danni's picture

There we go. Had to boot

There we go. Had to boot into Windows to do it. For some reason it was crashing under Wine.

This portion implements the mine that Healy's section suggested. It starts off with some story and then presents the first monster-occupied screens. Should be fairly easy to clear. Perhaps we can have some sort of difficulty curve to this? Or not. Depends on what other people are doing.

Edit: In retrospect I think this section is a bit too linear.

In order to backtrack this section you are going to need the Double Jump. Personally, however, I think revisiting section 2 should be done using a separate route as going through the same linear section backwards might be a bit boring.

I'm fond of your area and I think climbing back through the entrance using the double jump works quite well (though an alternate path would be cool, that's up to the next person I guess). If there are parts you aren't happy with you probably have time to make some changes, I don't see the enigmatic dotdot online at the moment.

P.S. I'm thinking maybe we should modify the signs to make the level more consistent. Everyone, tell me your thoughts on the following suggestions:

  • Area 1: Eastern Ruins Author: Sergio Cornaga
  • Area 2: Town + Country Author: Healy

Luluna's picture

Hi! I love what you guys did

Hi! I love what you guys did so far. This level has so much charm already.
I took way way too much time with my area, considering how lacking it is. And I probably made some parts way too hard.

Honestly, this is my first serious attempt at knytting a level. I really hope I didn't break something!
If you'd notice some huge, glaring mistake I've made, feel free to fix it. Thanks!

Stuff I did:
- Gave the player the double jump!
- Created custom object 4 and 5 (so I could try a frustrating gimmick)
- Used flags 0 and 1 (and cried while trying to figure out how they worked)
- Replaced tileset 255 (the weird rainbow-star one, didn't think it would be missed)

I think you've made some

I think you've made some fantastic additions. Your custom object is inspired. I don't see any huge glaring mistakes! The only thing I encountered was the minecart collision detection being a little wonky, but it looks like EffBee did the exact same thing. It would probably be better to just use the minecart's normal collision detection... this is stuff I'd be happy to go back and adjust once we reach the end, provided nobody feels like I'd be infringing on their artistic license.

I'm loving this level so far! Getting all this new content every few hours makes it seem like some sort of amazing episodic event...

Yeah, but you actually did yours roughly within the suggested time limit! It wouldn't take much polish to make things looks less fudged, you could even make a custom object now if you wanted.

P. S. Sorry for not making enough corner tiles for you to perfectly pull off that neat stony ground effect in the last room. I didn't think my tileset would last this long! Maybe I'll make up for it with some extra custom object overlays that produce the intended effect?

There's a wallswim on screen x978 y995, accessible through screens x978 y996 and x979 y995. Other than that, it looks good!

I like it. The appropriation

I like it. The appropriation of the ninja enemy was especially clever.

Healy: Surely he can be both! The circumstances that could lead a citizen of the Stonybrook village to have a ninja for a cousin sounds potentially steamy to me.

A few buggish things I noticed:

  • Two of your signs (x978y995 sign B and x979y995 sign B) are longer than the engine can handle and need to have a few words trimmed out.
  • x797y995 has floor without an edge tile on the right side.
  • x797y996 is the only place a pillar is used as a solid object, which I think should be altered... I'll probably also ask Hempuli for permission to make the edges of his tileset's pillars grey so they look less wall-like, I think it looks a little confusing at the moment.
  • The cliff at x978y993 has weird incorrect tiles.

Hey! I just saw this but I'd love to do a section. I can do it tomorrow, and it looks like Draknej's the last person to go so I'll add it on to their upload. Yay!

TheCube's picture

I'm working on a dead-end

I'm working on a dead-end section to the west which will have the hologram. That'll put us back to one path. Should have it uploaded this afternoon or tonight.

Is anyone else picking this up after me?

sergiocornaga's picture

I hope to pick it up again

I hope to pick it up again at the end for bug fixing and the addition of an area I had in mind, but it would be nice if at least one more person could create the area connecting Draknek's section to the area below (ideally featuring a rain god as well, assuming I haven't misinterpreted).

I don't have many ideas for how to actually end the level, though. Or start it? Should the level have any overarching plot? Opinions welcomed.

TheCube's picture

Alrighty, finished up my

Alrighty, finished up my section. It is possibly needlessly confusing, as there is an optional challenging part that ends up being completely worthless, but I thought it was a nice diversion and added to the sense of weirdness that I was going for.

The hologram is also available, making the East section (Heaven) accessible to non-super-players.

I feel like there's a nice difficulty curve going on, actually.

I like it!

Really nice additions. Especially x971y993, which has some particularly pretty floor patterns.

Some suggestions:

  • At x975y991 it is possible to double jump up the wall and enter a void. Maybe you should put something else up there?
  • On both x973y991 and x973y990 there's a gap in the ceiling, but it just leads to death or a void.
  • I find the shift that just takes you back a couple of rooms a little too weird! That was what you were going for though, so feel free to ignore this one. If you're interested in the effect it had for me, triggering it left me confused and wondering if it had changed anything else.

TheCube's picture

Glad you liked it :D I

Glad you liked it :D

I fixed the void issues and added a screen above where the double jump is possible.

I also added an extra screen for the shift which doles out the red key now. Not sure if we'll use it, but at least it's slightly less useless haha!

(I made the shift because I didn't intend anyone to get past those 4 laser bots, but since it turns out you could, I figured I should put SOMETHING there. Problem is, you can't get BACK past the bots, so I didn't want to just dead end it. So I did something weird and inexplicable. I was thinking about Sphere [the book] when I did it. I figure alien technology will do weird, inexplicable things. But yeah, it was just too confusing.)

These are good changes! I love the sign, and the additional shift screen has this really creepy alien quality I adore. If I'm going last, I'll be sure to slip a red door in somewhere if nobody else has put one in.

P.S. Because of the positive effect this time, if I have any issues with your future work I'll be inclined to criticise you relentlessly.

Gosh, so... who's going to try their hand at editing now?

TheCube's picture

I'll give it a shot today, I

I'll give it a shot today, I have some time. I'll see what I can come up with and upload it sometime this afternoon. I'll probly end up using the red key as well.

TheCube's picture

Technically it's finished

Okay, so I hope I didn't go too far with this, but I ended up "finishing" it. If you don't have the red key, you'll basically end up at the beginning. If you DO have the red key...you also end up at the beginning, except via a different path. BUT I was hoping that Sergio would have time to change the shift in my last screen (it's 994 986) to maybe make a new, dry-er version of the beginning to illustrate the consequences of Juni's actions.

Or not! I'm totally fine if you want to change it entirely or add parts on or whatever. I just figured in case there was no time to add anything else, this would be technically finished.

Also, my shifts are a little weird on one screen, but I'm not honestly sure how to use them very well. It appears sort of jumpy because I couldn't figure out how to not make them infinitely loop. It works though.

Excellent! I'll do my best

Excellent! I'll do my best to add a final area and polish things up for release in the next 12 hours.

Right now I'm about to eat dinner though, so I'll mention a few bugs in case you have time to resolve them before I start work. Prepare for wall of text (sorry)!

You want to use warps rather than shifts to resolve the jumpy issue; bank 0, object 20.

A wallswim triggers when running across the cloud leading into your area. Similar issues occur going left from x995y990, and on the three clouds that touch the bottom of screens x993y990, x993y991 and x993y992. The bug kind of fits on the clouds at the bottom though, you end up drifting upwards through a cloud, so you probably only need to worry about the x993y990 cloud that's easiest to trigger.

Could the transition on the cloud you climb from x993y991 to x993y990 be improved? Looking at the tileset it seems like it would be extremely hard, but it might be possible. I also wonder if the x994y989 issue could be handled any better, and I think you should make the body of the Rain God stretch into the water rather than cutting off abruptly.

Lastly, I'm filled with the desire to make small graphical modifications to a few of the areas I didn't work on. Is this against the spirit of things? Let me know if you're not OK with me doing anything to your area. I'm thinking I'll upload versions with and without such changes when I'm done with my area so I can revert anything that gets objected to.

TheCube's picture

I hope this isn't too late!

I hope this isn't too late! I also hope that you can copy screens from one level to another, so this isn't totally wasted haha.

I've updated the map to fix what I hope is all of the wallswims, and I moved all the clouds at the bottom of the screen up a tile. Can't believe I didn't think about that... I changed the Shift to a Warp, much better now. I think the transition between x993y991 and x993y990 is slightly better now too.

The rain god now stretches to the boiling cloud sea.

I didn't change x994y989. It would look better if it was a wall of impenetrable clouds, but I don't have enough time to do that, so it's functional as is. If you want to change it, please feel free! In fact, please feel free to modify any of my stuff, I don't mind.

PS I'm going to have you test all of my games ever. You're so thorough!

You're in time! Since the area you set up for me to make consists of modifying existing rooms anyway, I decided to work on a duplication of the entire level and copy screens over. I'll think about changing x994y989, but I doubt I'll have time. It's OK as-is!

"...Boiling cloud sea..." Damn, that's cool.

Perhaps you could finish the level? After all, you did lament going first.

sergiocornaga's picture

OK, I've given it an ending

OK, I've given it an ending and submitted it: http://www.glorioustrainwrecks.com/node/3195

I'm sorry for taking so long! I seem to have lost my touch for rapid development, so I decided to polish it excessively instead.

I went back and edited my original tileset for better collision detection, and then edited the rooms that had previously used invisible blocks to compensate for my failings. Let me know if this is a positive change.

Also, it looks like I couldn't be bothered doing the whole 'upload two versions' thing, so if you're even slightly unhappy with a change I've made to one of your rooms I'll revert it back to the previous version without hesitation. Hopefully you'll all be happy with my graphical additions, though!

Oh, and because I retitled the level, any of your prior save files won't be carried over unless you manually rename them. I think it's worth playing from the beginning, though!
