Haha oh boy. Kliking on a period Win98 PC certainly brings back some good memories and old frustrations. Hand in hand. Back in storage you go.

Use the password speedtest to run a simple benchmark. My vintage box can handle about 80 Yellow Joggers before it starts slowing down.

(The vintage box in question is an OptiPlex GX1 tower with a PIII CPU @ 450MHz and 512MB RAM.)

Edit: Uploaded a v1.1 with a cleaned up instructions page and a Win9x-style sample playback lag toggle ('w' key ingame). The lag mode has a bug where some shots seem to get stuck in the upper-left corner, but it more or less gets the point across.

Double edit: Hmm... MMF2 and Fusion 2.5 do not like some of the events in this game, particularly the rotation of the disco guy.

Chomp on the brains of the townsfolk as they try to flee. For the less-discriminating undead palate, animals are also available. There's no way to win, but if you do well, you'll go back to the grave satisfied.

WarioWare D.I.Y: Xmastime!

xmastime.gif

OK, this one really (probably) is my last game. It's a tribute to SpindleyQ's 2012 Christmas present to me, It's Christmastime! Sorry for not remaking a game you didn't make for me... wait, does that even remotely warrant an apology

Here's a Vine recording.

Note: this game is endless, devoid of interaction and has no win condition.

An artgame about the horrors of war.

art.jpg

This is an untitled artgame about the horrors of war. There is no way to win. This game also features death, which is a complex moral choice never attempted before by any medium. This is the only alternative you have besides witnessing the horror you have unleashed and all the lives you have taken. Again, please be aware that this game is art.

Game-Maker Source Release Jam / KotM #85

The source code to Recreational Software Designs' Game-Maker has been released! To celebrate, let's make games using Game-Maker!

Since Game-Maker is DOS-based, fire up a DOS machine - use DOSBox and set the cycles to 16000 (or use a real machine if you have one!).

You can get Game-Maker here! The "runtime" folder has a working installation of Game-Maker that is ready to use. The "cd" folder includes some extra resources if you need those.

Resources:

The Demo game provides a tour of some of Game-Maker's features.
This video walks through the different editors.
The Tutor example game demonstrates different block (tile) effects.

Game-Maker is not a tool but rather a suite of tools, each one editing the individual files that make up a Game-Maker game. Instead of loading/saving an entire game from the Game-Maker menu, you open the necessary files (such as palettes and blocks) every time you open a tool, and then save the file when you're done with the tool. You should generally use the tools in order from left to right:

- The Palette editor lets you edit individual colors from a 256 color palette.
- The Block editor lets you define the game's graphics and change the behavior of background tiles (such as whether they are solid, and what to do when the player collides with them).
- The Monster editor lets you create animated "monsters" from the Monster Blocks (images) you've made, and define their movement and other properties, such as the power level - a higher powered monster will defeat a lower powered one.
- The Map editor lets you design levels, which are each made up of a 100x100 grid of tiles that wraps horizontally and vertically. You zoom in by clicking on the Z button and then the section of the level you want to view.
- The Character editor lets you define the player character's animations, controls, and movement. Controls work by playing animations for each assigned key/joystick movement. To create movement, place animation frames away from the center.
- The Image editor lets you import images for use as a title screen, intermission graphic, etc.
- The Sound editor lets you define sounds that are played by the Character for certain animations.
- The Integrator lets you connect the different levels together and define entrance/exit points between levels, creating the game's structure.

Let's see what you make with Game-Maker (or anything else for that matter)!

Feel free to join us on IRC! When you're done, click here to upload your game!

Riddle of the Maze - Barry Edition

Riddleofthemaze-barryedition.png

A while back I joined a conversation about solving this old book, and the art in it. A gent suggested to acquire the book to admire the art alone and go from there. it was This book here. That of course started a dialogue of attempting to solve it. I thought of solutions like turning the pages, or just reading it without going to the rooms, but reading it as if it was a traditional book and finishing it. Another was a suggestion to redraw Christopher Manson's Maze from start to finish, room by room, detail by detail and that would be the solution. It took a couple years and well, I'm sure you know the results:

A lot of renditions of pretty art but in my format. I learned a ton about art by doing this. What exactly I can't say, but just the experience was enough. To say I studied and did another rendition of each and every room and maybe, just maybe my skills have honed just a little bit. This is definitely not my subject or at least wasn't before. I usually draw people portraits so a labyrinth still life is/was out of my league but I managed and, yeah, enjoy!

Some differences with this version:

This is different from the Riddle of the Maze CDRom / Phillips CD-i counterparts. There's no narration, no words, just the images and links to them. Clicking on the room number will take you to the next room as if you are simply reading the book or you can of course click on the doors traditionally to take you to the next room. Rooms with only one exit have the whole hotspot covered to the appropriate room.

There is also a secret room I put in there not in the original. If you find it PM me or find me on the intern-net in the wile of what the room is and how you got it there, what links to the room/etc. Enough to convince me you discovered it. It's a far fetch but I feel like some will find it. I consider the secret room the win condition of this version of the maze. Omitted special spoilers here. Happy searching. There are also the coast err PRIZES INVOLVED.

The interactive portaions (aka portions) were linked together using Adventure Maker using the html output so it should work well with tablets and phones as well as your internet browser desktop solution. I haven't tried every platform yet but I have no issues using the ones I've got. Enjoy!

Alienbill Minigame Advent Calendar

preview.png

Over the past ten years I've been making lots of tiny games!

This year for the run up to Christmas I took 25 of the best ones, made sure they worked on modern browsers, and put them here: http://games.alienbill.com/advent/
One is unlocked everyday. (or if you know ANYTHING about javascript, you can hack your way and see them all now.)

I usually use Processing, but GloriousTrainwrecks was a huge inspiration, and a lot of these are from various KotMs and events here
