The time is right... for making videogames! The Timezone Lottery Klik Jam happens on the first Saturday of every month, at a time chosen randomly by our top-of-the-line numerical hour-choosing machines. This month, it takes place at 3:30 pm UTC. Whenever that time rolls around for you, you have two hours to make a game!

How can I possibly make a game in that short a timespan, you gasp? There are many game-making tools available, but the most ludicrous and welcoming of all is Klik & Play. If you want to give K&P a shot, we have a Learning KNP FAQ available, as well as some advice on making it work on modern machines.

Making games is its own reward, but it can be much, much more rewarding when you're doing it with friends. To get the most out of this worldwide internet game jam, come talk with everyone on IRC. It's a great way to share this awesome experience, and get quick help when things aren't going right. Our server is irc.freenode.net, and our channel is #glorioustrainwrecks.

After you've made your game, upload it here!

For more information, check out the N00B FAQ.

Sign up below to get a reminder email the day before the jam!

Police Police Police Police

As the Chief of Police it is for some reason your job to personally bring beat cops over to the drunks who are trying to ruin a Police concert.

PROTIP: event security can stop drunks but they will be too beat up to continue working, and they don't do anything while partying with groupies.

The Ridiculous Game Ideas Thread

This is a thread for discussing game ideas, asking for help when you run into design problems, or throwing out brilliant ideas that you can't work into your game.

Here's some stuff I'm thinking of incorporating:

  1. Randomized enemies based on Google Image Search results
  2. Sprites that are photographs of my posed stuffed animals (A stuffed octopus vs. T-Rex puppet game seems like such a grand idea)
  3. Tentacle physics

Olson's Journey 2

olsonsjourney2screen.PNG

Olson is back, and his journey is not finished.
Yes, he wasn't actually looking for a lovely chair.
What is he looking for though? You'll have to find out.

-Amazing atmosphehsehehehere
-Many breathtaking environments
-Took way too long to make for what it is
-Objectively better than the first one
-Actually equally good
-Which means a lot because the first one was the shit
-Olson is a lovely comrade

Need a job... doing a trainwreck

I'm stuck in this city with no cash and no home (I'm couch surfing for now.) I decided that since I got a 3 day weekend ahead of me, I'm going to write a trainwreck and sell it. Ha! I just want to see what I can hammer out in 3 days. I can't find a job anywhere in this crappy city but I'm not ready to go back 'home' yet (I want to avoid my mom's couch again!)

I had many attempts before trying to hammer out games while keeping my eyes peeled for jobs but after a year's hunt, I used my tax refund to go on vacay, only to run out of cash and get a job that brought me to this city and I got into it with the people I work with (I don't like working with others, it seems) so now I'm stranded.

I keep getting flack from my family and friends that programming a game is stupid without extra schooling, Fuck school. I was bored to tears (maybe I'm so damn genius that I didn't need 16 weeks to learn algebra, how about 2 days? lolz)

I'm determined to finally get some games off the ground and make some money in doing what I love (altho using a game dev kit kinda is wonky than hard coding, I can always hammer out something in QB64 lolz or DarkBasic).

So this blog will chronicle my attempts. Let's see how this trainwreck goes!!!

The poly-faceted ethical conundrums of Klik of the Month Klub

In KotMK #4, kirkjerk raised an interesting point with his totally brill Conway West. What is the general deal with game forethought in relation to the klub? I know that nothing in relation to trainwrecks of a ferociously glorious nature is technically frowned upon, but I still feel dirty when I have come up with my basic concept for KotMK 2 weeks before it happens (which I'll admit is what happened for pac-manly). And I have already come up with my idea for the next one, an action-puzzler called Serengetting Down in which you must guide gnus to the local Wildebeestie Boys concert.

Basically, my thoughts are that it is not really a good thing. It becomes more of a race against time to not leave out features (with forethought, you know basically what Klik n Play can accomodate, and what you can fit in in 2 hours), as oppose to a scenario where you are furiously coming up with ambitious designs and then refining and scrapping and redirecting and, well, hyper-crappening. The pirate kart worked well in this regard, because the sheer volume of games required in a short time meant that there was no way you could think. I guess, also, it was right at the start of my re-acquaintance with KnP, so I forgot what it could and couldn't do.

Don't get me wrong, I am not here to tell people not to think about the games beforehand. That would be stupid, domineering, double-standard-a-riffic, and well, wrong, because frankly I don't care whether people do or don't and I am head over heels in love with every piece of user-generated content on this site. But I am finding it a little bit of a problem, personally, for my brain to stop thinking, and I need to know how to klik the habit. Maybe I should actually follow the allotted time? Being early on sunday morning, the nausea and total lack of focus from another horror saturday night might help, or it may result in me spending the two hours writing an incredibly vivid and emotionally raw backstory, with nary a game mechanic in sight.

So what are people's thoughts regarding pre-planning of 2 hour trainwrecks? What should I do, Dr. Miracle? Has anyone else dipped their cup into the KotMK moral quagmire and found something else that tastes, well, brackish?
