TAKE THIS - editor + source code

So do you guys like source code?

Anyway I finally finished a Ludum Dare game I started like years ago

http://zarat.us/tra/online-games/take-this.html

Here is the source code released under uhhh let's say Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial don't give it to chinese iphone app companies

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3923260/takethis.zip - it uses flashdevelop and flixel (flixel included)

The game has a secret FEATURE: Press "E" to enter the map editor. Keys 0-9+A select a tile, click to place it. D will log the array of the level on to the console log (or the flashdevelop log if you're running it under that.)

Pressing E while in a level will start the editor with that level loaded.

oh if you guys make any good levels I'll add them to the game or something I dunno

Want to see Pirate Kart play stats?

I tried making a Playtomic account that can see all the stats but not actually change anything.
site: http://www.playtomic.com
username: PirateKartKontributor
password: 2012inone

After logging in, click "2012 IGF PIRATE KART" on the left.

The per-game data is in Level Metrics. Once you switch to that you can check the boxes for the different "counter metrics" to see how much each game got clicked for each version. (viewing it as values is a little nicer than percents).

Unfortunately, the very high numbers of plays on a few of the v1.0 games isn't indicating popularity, but rather that I screwed up and those games didn't launch, so people clicked them multiple times.

Tracking the Pirate Kart Koverage

Chatting with Good Ol' SpindleyQ he pointed out that a lot of the action (including brief reviews) is happening on Twitter...
https://twitter.com/#!/SpindleyQ
https://twitter.com/#!/captain_panties
https://twitter.com/#!/realnoyb
https://twitter.com/#!/auntiepixelante
were all doing capsule reviews (in the same way some KotMKs I try to give feedback on every entry...)

SpindleyQ pointed out its been getting some coverage in interesting places!

I love the logo btw, who made that?

It's funny, because I think there on GT "Pirate Kart" had its roots in the carts of pirated games, and the way that one way to generate craploads of games would be the same kind of sprite swaps those carts used. But now, I think people assume it means something different, as a way to shanghai the IGF, and/or maybe a nod to the "pirate parties" in various european countries...

any more interesting links?

IGF thing

So uh Twitter is exploding right now with the suggestion that some sort of pirate kart-like compilation be thrown together at the last possible second to enter the IGF.

If you want in on that, email games to mike at meyermike dot com. The IGF deadline is this Sunday at like midnight PST or something. I presume ExciteMike will need time to throw games in. I dunno. Perhaps he'll post.

THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO ENTER THE IGF!!! MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE <3

Installing '94 multi-floppy KnP games with no floppy drive

Hello all!

I'm Ben and I'm a freelance designer. I've mostly worked for Dan Marshall's Size Five Games, specifically on Ben There, Dan That! and Time Gentlemen, Please!

As Dan and I have mentioned in a few interviews, we started designing games as teenagers on KnP and GF. People have shown interest in seeing these old, terrible games of ours, so I dug out the floppies. One of them was a one-disk game and easy to sort out (free download here: http://www.sizefivegames.com/forum/index.php?topic=4182.0). Unfortunately, most of them are multi-disk games and for various reasons I am now stuck with copies of each disk on my laptop hard-drive but no floppy disk drive. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit without the option to run XP mode.

I've managed to turn the contents of each disk into .iso image files. As far as I can tell, I need to:

1) create a virtual floppy drive
2) run Win 3.1 in DOSbox and use the vfd software to start the install process on the first disk image then swap between the disk images as the install program demands
3) once the game is installed, either play the game straight away or install KnP and then play the game through that.

After spending an afternoon fighting with Virtual Floppy Drive, I've given up on it. A couple of guys from different forums, noyb and RobF (don't know if they're called the same here) recommended I try these forums. RobF also linked me to a guide here on getting 3.1 running through DOSbox.

Does this sound the correct way to go about it? Anyone able to recommend another bit of freeware or option for creating a vfd rather than VFD? Not having a floppy drive OR the correct version of Windows seems to be a hurdle too far to get this to happen.

Thanks!

The old games sound resource

We don't have a sub-forum for resources so it's going in Engineers because that's the place where we make the games that we wish to play, to steal a phrase. This is all about chums helping chums so if you have a game that someone is requesting stuff from and you know how to rip stuff from various data files and/or you find a website that has stuff on it then make it known to the rest of us. Only together will we be able to infringe on intellectual property laws for the greater good.

Resources:
Ultimate DooM and DooM 2. All sound and music.
Heretic. All sound and music.
Hexen. All sound and music.
Strife. All sound and music.
Quake. All sounds.
Hexen II. All sounds and music.

MMF2 iOS Runtime

Clickteam just released an iOS runtime for Multimedia Fusion 2. This means that there is now a conversion path for games made in 1994 on Windows 3.1 using Klik & Play to be published in the Mac App store in 2011. Though I guess the free worldwide browser deployment with TGF2 for Newgrounds is actually still better.

...so who wants to make some mouse-movement-only 1024 x 768 trainwrecks?
