thoughts on development

I'm thinking about what platform I want to code on.

I think Processing has been pretty good to me, and I might stick with it... it lets me use my Java mojo, I've figured out how to do sounds, it can embed in a webpage and make standalone downloads, it has some 3D primitive stuff going on, it's kind of artsy.

The downside is it has a big footprint, in terms of download size and processing power, and its 3D is pretty rudimentary, plus I have to code a lot myself, though I'm slowly making progress on some simple engines.

I prefer to be conservative in picking up toolkits (which is a bit of a handicap my professional life shares as well)

So, criteria would be:
* should be embeddable in a browser ... I think downloads are a big handicap for people tooling around with your game
* I'd like to find some kind of 2D and/or 3D physics engine

Any thoughts? I'm taking a 2 part Flash introduction class, just to try and get a feel if that's something I want to get into. I think of the games at http://www.ferryhalim.com/orisinal/ -- but then again, that clearly has a TON of love in the A/V department that my games likely will lack

I was considering pygame, especially since professinally I think cementing my python skills would be a good thing, but I don't think that's embeddable.

---

In general I think I keep meaning to get more into the online indy game community, tigsource and all that stuff. And I have a hope with my new move reducing my commute to like 25 minutes, I might find it easier to find the time. But even then it's tough to for me to focus when I'm feeling angsty about my chances of making something cool. Also, it's so easy to get jealous when someone grabs an idea I've been thinking about, like heat seeking missles and sproingy rope physics.

Kate's Katelabs Worlds

flopp.png
Game File:

this floppy disc contains a bunch of the test worlds I made for katelabs to toy around with the systems. the ones you saw my screenshots of as I was making the game. The entire disc is under 2MB, big enough to fit on a flop. And it goes a long way. there's several milesworth of levels in here. whether or not they'll be fun for you to explore is another matter- but they may be

07/16/2011 - 16:00
07/16/2011 - 18:00
Etc/GMT-7

The Klik of the Month Klub meets right here on this very website on the third Saturday of every month at 4pm Pacific Time (taking daylight savings into consideration) for a two hour Klik & Play Showdown. Everyone who participates gets two hours to create something from scratch in Klik & Play. Abusing the stock objects is encouraged. If you really loathe Klik & Play you can use whatever game development platform you want. Two hours is a pretty tight time limit, though, so choose wisely!

Klik & Play is absolutely free to download, and learning it takes minutes, so everyone can get in on the action.

Want to talk to your fellow Klikwreckers? Join us on IRC -- server irc.freenode.net, channel #glorioustrainwrecks. We've also got a Mumble voice chat server -- just connect to glorioustrainwrecks.com using Mumble and you can talk to us like real human beings! Join the mayhem!

After you've made your game, you should upload it here!

Lumberjack.wad

Screenshot from 2019-04-13 10-39-05.png
Game File:

Here's a Doom WAD I made one day in 2013 and then abandoned for almost exactly 6 years. The other day I remembered it existed, dug it out of a dusty old backup of a long-dead laptop, and cleaned it up a bit.

LUMBERJACK.WAD: You are in an open space filled with trees. Somewhere there is a chainsaw. You can use it to cut the trees down.
TREEPUNCHER.WAD: Inspired by an earlier, buggy version of the same level, it's basically the same except you can also destroy trees by punching them.

Requires a ZDoom-compatible source port (such as gzdoom) and DOOM2.WAD as a base. (I used zdoom to develop it originally, because it was 2013.) It'll also work with Freedoom Phase 2 but it just doesn't feel the same.

I feel like it's appropriate to submit to The Great Resurrection Game Jam more than a year late?
