i like how digging to the bottom of the screen seems to always function as a "try again"

If that had anything to do
If that had anything to do with how easy it was to move the crates, I just uploaded an update that fixed that, as well as a small fix to make digging below you a little more precise-ish.
Other than that, this may not be the most intuitive game, I think.

That bums me out. I work with Game Maker 8.1 in Windows 7, so I'm not really sure I can think of any ways to rig a solution. :(
