Hi GT gang.

I don't know how aware of this people here are, but I am an artist in my final year of a fine art degree. I have started making virtual performances—that is using virtual, videogame-like spaces as locations for performances—and would like your help creating new spaces in which to perform.

The only requirement is that they be 3-D. Unity 3D is super easy to just plonk models in and have camera and physics taken care of, and I can help you if necessary, and 3D Rad is simple for similar reasons. Google Sketchup is a nice simple 3D modelling program, and a plugin that exports to Unity is available called PlayUp. There's also a 3D Rad related plugin that kind of confused me.

I won't give you any further rules for these spaces, but I will vaguely advise that—so far it seems—a good virtual performance space:

  1. Be open (whatever that means to you).
  2. Have things to perform with.
  3. Be played from a first-person perspective.

But challenges to these rules are much more than welcome.

I will be using these spaces to help me figure out what makes a good performance space, and I will stream myself playing each entry submitted via twitch.tv/ryliejamesthomas. Potentially some may also be used in my graduate exhibition (but I'll ask permission for anything public), but who knows; it's early days, and I still have a lot to think about.

The starting point for this idea was our own Fabien Poree's Destroy Your Home, and some examples of me performing in this game can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaSzjHiPqLH4-_BxBSXlCq1SG-uXYWqci

[i]Short version:[/b]

Make some 3-D games that are low on rules for me to play round with/in.

Thanks!

ZZT Essentials: Ancient Castle of the Dogs

dogcastle.png

I'm BC_ . I may be most remembered on the internets with the nick Viovis, AntiViovis, Vivois, what have you.

I've been part of ZZT since 1996 and part of the ZZT ug (i call community ug for short) since early 98. We had a couple AOL Free Trials and downloaded some lost forever games. Know this that there were 1000s of ZZT games that are lost forever in aol, hundreds of stories of teenage angst and adventure gone through the tides of time... Knowing this, I'm pretty sure the same applies to KNP, there were probably many lost gems in the AOL Vault.. so uhh, historically we'll never know the whole history since they were the only company successful to have their own library aside from the bbs's and internets and etc.

Uhh anyway I know there are some games that go as unmentionably fun, some games take effort, some games are chill and laid back, some are interactive cinemas, some are only cinemas... Some redefine the meaning of a game, as some involve just wandering around and tinkering with stuff, talking to objects, and in ZZT you tend to see all genres.. I think a lot of great has been made in ZZT but for those outside without a passport you're not really given the full scope of things.. I'd personally just like to share a couple of my favorites...

Games that not only I'm one to like, but that I think others of this crew may like since I am a fan of many of the games released here and I will do my best to choose games that carry that spirit.

I present Newt's third ZZT game Castle of the Dogs. This game spoke to me because I thought it had a certain degree of suave in it. I liked the writing style, it was blunt, it went from point A to point B fast. Part of the tests of time is as time marches forward, writing refines and changes.. This was a time piece where, you and your wife were on a plane and hte pilot crashed, and he didn't make it, and your wife was captured and taken to a giant castle, full of dogs. Why? I don't know.. ask newt. All I know is like you miss your wife and have to go through a dog labyrinth full of giant dogs and gather keys because dogs are high tech like that. There's also a really tough puzzle by glynth that's not impossible, but just keep trying..

I think thepsycophant did a wonderful job here with narrative, attempt on a good story, and I think it's a little more than meets the eye, so I think playing it now I still really liked it. And it was based on an abandoned moment of his OG series... so It's the first step of difference from style and might be where he developed his sound, course that's all for another story. Just make sure if you see a star to move into a corner and dodge it, cuz stars don't die... and aim for the dog noses... Somehow that's the core.. It's a lesson for us all. If you're fighting a gigantic dog.... uhh, their noses?

And this'll be the only time I attach lyon to a post like this, so get it here or I'll link to here. Get ZZT from around the nets. Maybe in the future we'll get Tyger, but for those in winders land This little item works.

Pitch and Putt Club

gtscreenshot.png

A golf simulator that allows you to actually, physically play golf using your computer's mouse as the target hole. I'm sure most people reading this do not have golf balls and clubs laying around, but part of the appeal is that anything you want to use can fulfill those roles. I did not intend for the first two sentences to rhyme with each other.

Work on this began in September 2018, and I kept putting it away due to various life circumstances, as well as getting frustrated because my grand ideas were not always possible - or the solution for making them possible wasn't readily apparent to me. All in all, if I tallied up the amount of time I actively spent working on it, excluding the brainstorming stage, it probably took me a month's worth of full time work. I'm happy with the end result, a funny program that lets you to play a pretty well known game in a way that's just slightly different enough to seem weird and interesting.

Something I discovered during development, while I was testing this, is that you can play this game without actually treating it like a golf game. You can just swat the mouse around to activate the "hole out", and it almost takes on this fidget-spinner type quality to it. So while I keep referring to this as a "game" or a "golf simulator", in many ways it can also serve as a toy.

I'm glad to be able to work on other stuff now, free from the looming spectre of "but you haven't finished Pitch and Putt Club."

Hope someone out there enjoys this!

FALVALIOUS '88 : THAT IS GALACTIC DANZIG

GalacticDanzig.png

Anyone who's played GALAGA '88 will know that the normal GALAGA "challenging stage" has been replaced with a bonus round that begins with the words "THAT IS GALACTIC DANCING"

My whole game is a stupid GALAGA '88 joke.

===PLAY THE REMAKE HERE===

==original description follows==

This is my first game!

THE STORY:
The nefarious DR. MOUTH has stolen the precious GEMS from the royal APPLE FAMILY while they were visting a soccer game in BRITON. Luckily, world famous soccer star RONALD CATJUMPER was playing at the game and witnessed the event. He was able to trap DR. MOUTH in the middle of the soccer field, but not before DR. MOUTH used his GRAVITY WORLD FLIPPER powered by the GEMS he stole to turn the entire place 90 degrees! It's up to RONALD CATJUMPER to use his powers to get back as many GEMS as possible. He only has 60 seconds to do so though, as right before the events listed here he put some POPCORN in the break room microwave, and somebody would be likely to nab it if he left it sitting there!

THE GAMEPLAY:
RONALD CATJUMPER has many amazing abilities, but unfortunately almost all of them are only useful in a game of soccer. However, there are three skills that will help him in his adventures today:

1) RONALD CATJUMPER is a master of movement! (used by pressing the ARROW KEYS) Even though the field is flipped, RONALD will use the walls of the stadium to keep from flying into the atmosphere
2) When RONALD jumps he turns into a CAT, giving him great leaping power (used by pressing SHIFT)
3) RONALD (PhD) is also a fantastic scientist, and brought a CLONING DEVICE he invented to the field, disguised as an ordinary trash can (used automatically)

When the game starts, 60 seconds will be on the timer, and 1 RONALD CATJUMPER, DR. MOUTH and GEM will be present on the field! DR. MOUTH has very slippery fingers, and tends to drop the GEMS very easily, most often when RONALD or a clone of him touches a GEM. If two GEMS touch each other, they will vanish back to safety in the hands of the ROYAL APPLE FAMILY. If no GEMS are present on the screen DR. MOUTH will be likely to drop another onto the field, but not before RONALD CATJUMPER can use the moment to create a CLONE of himself!

Good luck, players!

THE SCORING:
0-1: You are awful. You should be ashamed of yourself.
2-10: The ROYAL APPLE FAMILY will never see their money again. You jerk.
11-40: Pretty good, but DR. MOUTH has made off with most of the GEMS!
41-70: Great work!
71-100: You're awesome!
100+: You got more GEMS than there were in the first place! How the heck did you do that?
