a maze of my mistakes

maze.png

A small flatgame poem playable in-browser. Use arrow keys to wander. Audio starts in chrome after first key-press.

Originally made as a demonstration for a workshop. Both my roommates took the workshop, which was online, and when I returned home, they were both still making flatgames in the living room, surrounded by rainbow sticker-sheets and old books for scanning in. Excitedly, they showed me what they had made. Later: Evan said to me "it's funny that you made an example game and called it 'the maze of my mistakes.'"

Inspired by Lee Tusman's p5 flatgame: https://leetusman.com/p5-flatgame/

MarMOTS poll

So, MarMOTS has been live for a little over a week now, and you guys have cranked out some phenomenal stuff. It makes me very excited and pleased to see people enjoying my dinky little creation and building cool stuff with it.

My TODO list looks like this:

  1. Fix horrible crashing bug that happens when you type a single character
  2. notification on chat update
  3. Rename, delete picture
  4. Display last modified date
  5. version control (being able to snapshot a version of a drawing such that you can always come back to it)
  6. ANSI Gallery should show drawing name
  7. Who's Online (this could even be shown live on the website without logging in)
  8. Better HTML generation (either homebrewn or using Ansilove)
  9. Keyboard shortcut for switching special characters / colours
  10. block select
  11. Eyedropper tool
  12. Layer support

I'm interested to hear all of your thoughts on what I should work on next. (Obviously the crash bug needs to get fixed ASAP.) What items on that list are important to you? What items could you do without? What items would you add?

Don't know if this has already been posted here but this is enough to fuel thousands of beautiful trainwrecks and all of their children.

Game File:

This is a one-button game of avoiding danger in a distant moon base. While its control scheme is familiar - press button to make the spinning craft move forward - the wrinkle is that it keeps spinning even while moving, so you'll be constantly moving in wide arcs. Be careful, and watch out for those cannons!

This is loosely inspired by the Taito arcade game Volfied in scenario.

FRED'S EXCITING ADVENTURE [Halloween Prank/Artgame]

------------------------------------------------------------
THE FOLLOWING POST IS A WORK OF FICTION INTENDED TO CREATE ATMOSPHERE AND BACKSTORY FOR A HALLOWEEN GAME
------------------------------------------------------------

Figured I'd make a new thread for a new month.

A quick note before this week's find: Prior to the Geocities rescue mission (great job all involved!) I had made a list of the places I had been downloading these freehosting picks from. Now that list isn't anywhere to be found. I know I had been writing it on my other laptop, but I can't find it anywhere on the drive. I still worry that the list might have contained links to some Geocities pages that we didn't get to mirror.

What I did find on the laptop however was "Fred's Exciting Adventure"! It's a cute little platformer starring what looks like a cross between Cool Spot and Sonic the Hedgehog. The levels make heavy use of KnP clipart, but there's an interesting visual conflict between the home-made and stock art. A little green guy runs back and forth on the hill, and knocks you into the air if you touch him. He's a little difficult to jump over, but it seems to work if you just hold the right arrow and jump key down. The next screen introduces spikes and moving platforms, which make the green guy more dangerous (notice the blood on the spikes if you fall on them!). He even has the nerve to stop at the edge some times, making it impossible to jump him until he starts moving again!

I haven't had time to finish the game yet (so busy that my Monday updates are on Thursday!) but a glance at the levels in KnP seem to indicate that the game isn't very long (maybe even unfinished?). Something about the game feels really familiar to me, and I don't know why that makes me uneasy. Maybe it's just that I don't know if this game was from one of the Geocities sites we could have lost, which adds an air of mystery to it for me. Until I track down that text file again, or find the site I got it from, this game is an orphan.
