This zip file from 2003 I just dug up holds the second implementation I ever made of Gravver, a game concept I've returned to a few times over the years including a recent Megazeux version. As far as I can tell, this one never had sound effects.

If you look in the source code, there are some command line flags... I don't remember how it all worked but there seems to have been a GUI editor to make your own levelsets, with a lot of hardcoded keybinds.

Pong Like It's 1999

pokepong.png

Home for winter break, I stumbled upon my old KNP folder on a dusty Micron PC. Submitted for your horror: a pair of Pokémon-themed pong games I made in KNP back in 1999. The games are left unaltered from their original states. The sprites, music selections, prepubescent "voice acting," readmes, and bugs are all as I left them. The only thing I did today was compile them in KNP and zip them up.

First, a Pokémon themed KNP pong game I made back in 1999 and never released online. Somewhat intriguing for the terribly balanced "voltorb" ball which either player can attack to force an instant stalemate, and the poorly-rendered sprites made in Microsoft's 3d Movie Maker (which was itself a source of video trainwrecks back in the 90s).

Player 1: W and S move, Z shoots.
Player 2: Arrows move, Shift shoots

Second is a surrealist reflection of 90s media culture in the form of an overly long pong boss battle between Misty from Pokémon and a demonic version of that dancing baby from that early internet video. Ash Ketchum's head is the ball. And the baby throws diapers ripped from a screenshot of Rugrats. And the background is a low-res photograph of a Lego Mindstorms "invention" with my fingers over the lens.

I released this one online for God knows why. Last year, I let Softpedia upload some of my older games to their site in a moment of weakness. This "new and fun Pong remake that will keep you busy for a long time" (their words) has somehow received 286 downloads to date from undiscerning netizens.

Move: Arrow keys.

Hardcore Gaming 101: Your Weekly Kusoge

There's a new feature on HG101 called Your Weekly Kusoge which I thought may be relevant to peoples' interests.

The first game is the Famicom version of Ikki, which seems to be a pirate cart favourite.

Reverse-engineering Klik & Play .GAM files

I'm close! I've been plugging away at it for a couple of hours every other evening or so. Every time I poke at it, I get a little bit closer to cracking what I need to know, which is really pretty cool.

(To be clear: What I have is still far, far away from a full understanding of the file format that would be required to, say, write them, or put together some sort of KlikVM. But I am one structure away from pulling out proper animation data, which feels really awesome.)

Hogan's Run

Game File:

In a dystopian future where all adults over the age of 29 are executed by the state, you, a new Sandman recruit, must train your firearm skills by shooting a spinning can in midair to make it bounce upward. Featuring an acclaimed soundtrack by Wario Ware Inc.'s own 9-Volt.

You can score bonus points by hunting and shooting "points of interest" as they appear. It's up to you to guess as to what those are!

Shapetastica (random Game Maker experimentation)

Shapetastica.JPG

So I decided to make a game for the TIGSource Assemblee competition, and in between working on it I've been messing about with Game Maker in order to improve my skills. Here's a simple shoot em up game that has come from that.

Left and right to move and Ctrl to fire.
