Home R Where The Heart Is

check out the web version on your phone!

for global game jam
the theme was what home means to you
i saw a lot more serious/narrative games this year
seems like a bad idea because people will probably "not go all the way"
or go part of the way just to be evocative
or to be real twee or whatever
though, some of the games that I had liked this year were the more heart warming ones

at home, when my family celebrates christmas,
we put a black santa on top of the tree
i found out recently that my grandma painted him black so he would look like my grandpa

these sprites are mostly color edited to look black
there is a history of black bart bootleg memorabilia
parallels with my black santa
in many of these shirts there will be multiple black barts all crowding around
sometimes all hitting on a woman with a big butt
one of my favorites was my former roommate's boyfriend's shirt that she would wear
it had multiples of different looking barts in a roller coaster
and it says "Bébé's Kids" which is a 90's animated comedy about a black family
that doesn't look anything similar to the simpsons

the sprites i edited are from the konami simpsons arcade beat em up
when the simpsons touch each other, sometimes they do their team attacks
i added a homer strangling bart animation
i was surprised this classic motif from the simpsons,
of homer strangling bart was not in the arcade game at all
i added this in place of having homer and bart's team attack

the sounds are primarily from click team fusion's free sound library
with the exception of a vocal recording of "fuck off mom"

Mouse In The Maze 60th Anniversary Jam

Long Ago... In the year 1959... 60 YEARS AGO at MIT... A program is being added to the TX-0 Computer. The program is Mouse in the Maze!!!

Mouse in the Maze is an early computer game, now lost (re-created ports exist), involving mostly what the title says: A light pen was used to draw a maze and a computer mouse found the cheese or other foodstuffs. It was created by Doug Ross and John Ward [http://www.bitsavers.org/pdf/mit/tx-0/TX-0_history_1984.txt]. The game seems to have not gotten as much publicity as other early games, but it is early nonetheless! The MAZE has been a common structural motif of the video game such as Mouse in the Maze, Pac-Man, Bomberman, Wizardry, 3D Monster Maze, Megami Tensei, MIDI Maze, Maze War, 3D Maze Windows Screensaver, Radar Rat Race, the list goes on and on...

In honor of 60 years of such a game's creation, I would like to host a small jam, the rules are simple:
1: The player character should preferably be a MOUSE, though other rodents would be acceptable, keep in mind there are more kinds of mice than house mice and pet mice!
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muridae
What possibility!
2: The game takes place in a MAZE, a labyrinth, a world of routes and turns and too many dead ends. However it does not need be a literal maze- perhaps it is a maze of secrets, or a maze of inner conflict. It could be seen from top down or from first person- a rat's eye view. It could be more than one floor, why it could even be a dreadful teleporter maze!

Optional Rules:
X1: The game should have foodstuff to collect, CHEESE perhaps. However extensive research reveals mice don't seem to prioritize this food... get creative! I am aware an alternative version of Mouse in the Maze featured MARTINI glasses, but I would strongly recommend against giving rodents such beverages in real life. If you are to feature such a drink in a game, please do so cautiously!
X2: Ultra Hard Mode! The game could be controlled by PEN or TOUCH input as Mouse in the Maze was controlled by light pen input. However I am sure implementing such controls are a heavy task.

I am aware that some will be exhausted by the end of Sekret Santa, so eventually I will make an ASSET PACK that will be free to use, hopefully a little bit before the jam starts, but delays may occur.

MOUSE ASSET PACK is uploaded!

INCLUDES: Top-down rodent in six fabulous colors, brick and floor tiles, and a half baked first person dungeon crawler! I hope you enjoy. Please credit me as gisbrecht or MarikenG, and feel free to edit!

Happy Game-Making!

oh the humanity

I got klik & play for christmas, sometime around 1995 I think, from probably my favourite uncle of all time. I never actually finished a game with it , preferring instead to try and make ambitious multi-genre 007 games, which I would get bored of halfway through developing the tank level.

Now, after the Pirate Kart Meltdown, my mind has been re-blown about how AMAZING this program is for really quick game development. Not only that, you can make the games as pretentious and emotional-subtextually loaded as you like, because the sheer crudeness of the mechanics and hilarity of the clipart will lower the gravitas like nobody's business.

Now, there are two other factors:
a) It is in my nature to get over any fervent interest (like K&P) within a month or so, and not return to it for a long time. So I better start making some stuff before I mentally move on!
b) I work nightfill at a supermarket, and usually finish around 4-5am, after which I generally decide it is a good idea to not go to sleep. So I have about 2 hours of dead time before the day would begin for most people.

Are you getting a picture here? Well hold your spanish dancing horses, there is one more thing:

c) I have recently begun a new relationship, with a girl I am quite fond of!

Ergo, my fellow glorious trainsurfers, I will attempt to chart the course of this relationship, or at least thoughts pertaining to it, with multiple Klik & Play games, each made in less than two hours and fuelled by Ballantine's Finest. They will be pretentious, they will make you cringe, and they will occasionally be loaded with subtle references only I will understand. And oh yes, there will be plenty of horrendously fast-animated cheerleaders.

To begin, I re-submit to you something I made for the pirate kart:
