TEAM GLORIOUS TRAINWRECKS DOT COM ASSEMBLE

TIGSource B-Game Competition: A competition to celebrate awfully good games.

You guys, we need to team up and enter this thing. Our community was born to do this.

I volunteer for lead engine coding and music duties.

Does anyone know any (free-ish) rapid game development systems that, like, have script files in text that could go into a version-control system? Does GameMaker do that? XNA Studio? I'd rather not force people to learn my Stackless Python engine, mostly because the tool support just isn't there, but it is pretty freakin' sweet if you know Python.

Shrimp Wrangler

ShrimpWranglerCOVER.png

Plot:

Earth is in pieces...

After an alien crash in the late 1970s turns the world upside down, technology begins advancing at a rate that has never been seen before. People are driving hover cars, talking through smartphones and...

Suddenly there's huge shrimps everywhere?

Believe it or not, the effects of the alien crash were mostly shrimp related. Now massively increased in size, the shrimps began their transition from water-borne crustaceans to the terrors of dry land, eating a majority of the Earth's plant-life, killing people and spreading like a wildfire. People went mad. The government began making quarantine zones. Hope was lost...

Until... The Shrimp Wranglers arrived. They wrangled most of the shrimps back into their natural habitats, slowing down their climb towards global domination and saving humanity along with most of planet Earth's greenery.

Hope was back.

Now it's the 1980s, the wranglers, now retired from their positions as shrimp combatants have taken to the saddle and travel to cities in trouble to save them.

THIS IS...

SHRIMP. WRANGLER.

---

Controls:
- A and D will maneuver you left and right respectively, helping you dodge obstacles.
- The spacebar allows you to jump into the air, providing another way to avoid slamming into something.
- Left-clicking allows you to channel the bond you have with your shrimp into a powerful beam of energy, destroying some obstacles that lie ahead. Be careful, as not only does this ability have to charge up to be used, it can only destroy organic objects. Avoid helicopters, uncontrollable cars and walls at any cost.
- Escape will display the escape menu, either letting you continue your shrimp adventure or leaving. Your high-score will be saved.

Thomas Ingham

While playing through Ludum Dare 29 entries I stumbled upon the games of Thomas Ingham, and the three I've found are all wondering trainwrecks.

Actinium the Wrought is a hack n' slash type deal, where you are a caveman looking for his brother, and clobbering things along the way.

In Mega Friendship Battle Elevator you ride an elevator. On each floor a bunch of enemies enter and the camera stares at your front. An enemy spawned on top of me and I died before I was able to press a button.

Chupacabra looks like a 3-D mascot platformer, but kind of reminds me of Castlevania 64. There is a disobediant camera, and a lot of tunnels. It kind of nauseated me.

Bad Bang Letter: A Letter for Bad Bang

WARNING: The following letter is written in a deliberately inflammatory way! Please do not read if you are pregnant or might become pregnant.

Anyway, I'm doing this thing called Bad Bang, where you have to write the worst fanfic illustrated by the worst drawings. Because this is an exchange type event, you have to write a letter to the person who was assigned to write for you, so they can get a good read on your likes/dislikes? I didn't, though, or at least not for this exchange. Anyway, I figured at least one person would get a kick outta this, so here it is! Made in Twine, natch.

In case this is necessary, here are the fandoms I requested for Bad Bang:

Advance Wars
Any Character

Homestar Runner
Strong Bad, Strong Sad

Regular Show
Benson

Inferno Cop
Inferno Cop, Hellfire Boy, Mecha Cop

Zone of the Enders series
Cage Midwell

Knytt Stories
Green Chomper, Juni

Batman Beyond
Bruce Wayne, Terry McGinnis

Steven Universe
Greg Universe

Chrono Trigger
Magus, Frog, Robo

Rockman|Mega Man
Any Character

Aaand my vetoes, the all important stuff that the writer can't write for me.

VETOS: noncon/dubcon, underage, explicit sex scenes, incest for Steven Universe.

He did the Monster Mash

Give the racing game the run-around and put Freestyle Box Wasteland back on the shelf, it's monster time!

Attached is a test version of the fourth idea I had that I am going to be working into an actual game, the third one was going to be a Chu Chu Rocket clone only it was going to be Cock Cock Rocker where you had to guide the rockers into the limos and turn away the screaming fans away but I only could go far as having a single rocker turn ninety degrees when hitting a wall (by, cleverly, changing the angle, which is a device that I should use in more games) as I don't think it's possible to take it further than that or at least my skill level.

See, I want to make a game that could be fun in both single and multiplayer (single player in Cock Cock Rocker would just be a puzzle mode as there is no way I would be able to do multiple AIs using such a basic Klikteam product. Maybe in Multimedia Fusion but not this) and the whole players managing a group of NPCs seemed like a good idea for fast action and laffery so I took the 'herding' mechanism of Chu Chu Rocket and changed it to something that was more direct and that evolved into what we have here. The next step will be either be making the game about herding small objects or eating the most small objects before the timer runs out.

Or maybe just giant Dracula versus giant Wolfman battling whilst small objects run away only to be crushed underfoot whilst you toss buildings and cars at each other until there's only one monster left. That's pretty rhinoceros innit.

That will be the plan for Monster Mash - Gigantic Creature Feature Throwdown.

Twine: storing images inside the HTML file

Update: embedded images in Twine 1.4 already use this technology automatically.

One aspect of Twine that I very much like is that the entire game is included in a single HTML file. It provides a great convenience and advantage for maintaining and archiving the game. Some Twine games include images in the text, and in most all cases there are in the form of hyperlinks to external image files, which, being separate from the game file, are vulnerable to being lost or broken.

There is a way to store image files (among other files) inside HTML using Base64 encoding, which converts binary files into streams of ASCII. Simply use an online Base64 encoder to convert your image into a Base64 data URI, and paste that wherever you would paste a URL to an image. This works not only for the HTML img tag, but also for Twine's img markup (although it probably won't be syntax-highlighted correctly in the passage editor).

Here is an example:
[img[data:image/png;base64,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]]

(If you paste the entire data URI between the braces into your browser URL bar, you can see the image.)

Some advantages:
- Stores all the game's resources in one file.
- Images are preloaded when the game starts.

Some disadvantages:
- Base64 encoding increases the size of the images by 33%.
- Can't easily use the same image file for multiple passages - each passage must have a full copy of the file. (You can work around this with some JavaScript preprocessing, if you really need to.)
- Doesn't work with IE versions < 9... go figure.
