Not A Puzzle Platformer: Levels 1 and 2

n-a-p-p-1.png

I'm of the opinion that, among many indie game puzzle platformers, the "platformer" part really doesn't add very much to the "puzzle" part, especially ones which are clearly imitative of Portal. While Portal was ostensibly a "3D platformer", that doesn't necessarily mean that its puzzles or puzzle design clarity naturally degrades down to a 2D platformer. Too much focus is given on the length-height plane of Portal's puzzles, and, I feel, not enough on the length-width plane. So, in that vein, here are the first two levels of a game that is not a puzzle platformer.

WASD - Move.
Mouse - Aim.
Left click - Teleport.
R - Restart.
Reach the staircase to escape.

As it turns out it took ages to implement the special blocks' mechanics, so you only get 2 levels for now. Maybe in the future more will come forth.

The main inspiration for this was probably Epsilon, a somewhat drearily-coloured Portal-inspired puzzle game that is, strictly speaking, not a platformer either.

(Note: This may seem like I'm especially talking about the recent indie release "Gateways" but I haven't actually played that game outside of the first minute of the demo.)

Jazz Blocks

JazzBlocks.png

This game has nothing to do with jazz. Rather, it was inspired by the old "JezzBall" and "Maxwell's Maniac" games from the Microsoft Entertainment Pack.

Guide the bouncing ball so it rolls over all the coins. Once all the coins have been collected, the exit opens up. Bring the ball to the exit to progress to the next level.

You can drag the blue squares with the mouse. They are useful for guiding the ball toward or away from different areas. You can even use them to completely block off certain areas. Brown squares disappear when the ball hits them. Don't let the ball hit the spikes.

Polyfurcation

polyfurcation.png

The mechanics of this game appeared fully-formed in my head while half asleep one morning last week. I've been spending every spare moment working on it since.

Seriously this is the best game I've ever worked on. (EDIT: upon a few minutes reflection, I've realised that no, Putt-Putt is way better. But this is still really good.) So much potential. You should play it and tell me what you think of it so far.

It is a game about dudes on a grid that need to get to a goal, except you can create more or less dudes by passing them through blocks larger than one square.

I have four sets of levels that I'm calling "worlds". The first world is a set of 4 "this is how the game works" levels. The second world is a set of 3 "mazey" levels, which are good. The third world is a set of 3 levels involving enclosed squares, which act as crazy traps from which your dudes can never escape. These levels are also pretty good. The fourth world is a set of 3 mediocre levels about building weird shapes. I don't think these are very interesting, but I am very interested to hear what your experiences with them are like.

Slime Climb

First one to the top wins! But you'll have to work together to make it.

Green:
W,A,D to move, Lshift to ask for a restart

Blue:
Up, left, right to move, Rshift to ask for a restart

Spent a little extra time adding some polish to the game, because it was basically broken without it. Hope that's alight!
