Chris DeLeon

Chris DeLeon is an interesting guy.
He did a "game a day" thing for a while: http://www.interactionartist.com/
It's a mixed bag (with too many abstract things IMO) but some neat gems too.

He encourages people to get into making games, and has a few iPhone games published.
He also has a series of newsletter-y game design lessons: http://www.chrisdeleon.com/?page=free -- i keep meaning to get back to that.

His twitter ( http://twitter.com/ChrisDeLeon ) is worth subscribing to, sometimes it's smart, sometimes wise, sometimes none of the above and just preachy, but usually interesting.

"Commercial videogame development is architecture. Hobby videogame development is making pillowforts from anything in reach."

(Which is funny, I wonder if he considers his iPhone games closer to architecture or hobby... his iphone games are decent but lack a certain amount of soul, or feel for physics, or something. They're generally nicely polished implementations of small game ideas, but (for the 2 I've bought) don't have a lot of level design goodness)

Anyway, "Glorious Pillowforts" seems like a nice concept too.

The 256-In-1 Klik & Play Pirate Kart planning and discussion thread

There has been some discussion over here about a new Pirate Kart project. I support this endeavour!

This big point of contention is this: do we wait for TIGSource's B-Games II competition? According to this thread, it is coming after the current "Adult/Educational" competition -- so probably in the next couple of months. I really want us to have a strong showing for this, and I still know of no better way for this community to produce something incredible than a Pirate Kart.

However, if people have ideas for something else excellent we could do for B-Games II, then I am all for booting up our own Pirate Kart II. I've already begun work adding some features to the site that will make it bearable to compile all of these games after the fact.

I'm thinking 256 games in 48-hours is a nice, insane goal. It took us 17 people to make 100 games, so we're looking at recruiting at least 40 (or for professor_scissors to clone himself 11 times) to get to 256, which is all kinds of absurd. Any thoughts on naming? 256-In-FUN? ACTION 256? Team Glorious Trainwrecks Dot Com Presents The 100-In-1 Klik & Play Pirate Kart II: Now With 256 Games?

Thoughts? Discuss here, rather than in my t-shirt thread!

When I give up on something, after a while I'll come back and do it even better.

There's no non canons here anymore. This shit has been finished and damn hell yeah ass right I'll move on. To much better stuff.

Grenade Pong

grenpong.png
Game File:

DISCLAIMER: This took four hours to make, which is inexcusable. The only consolation in this is that it's a much higher quality game than I normally turn in.

My original idea was to make some kind of EXTREME TENNIS game where the ball was a grenade and the players were carrying machine guns, but because I couldn't be bothered to put in a net or introduce bounce physics and stuff I ended up making GRENADE PONG instead.

Each player is equipped with a gun and a forcefield. Like Pong, the aim of the game is to bat the grenade off the opposite side of the screen. Unlike pong, you can only deflect the ball when your forcefield is activated, and your forcefield only stays active for about 1/3rd of a second each time you use it (and takes just over 1 second to recharge). If you touch the bomb while your forcefield is inactive, you lose instantly.

But wait - there's more! You can't move and fire. Your characters will automatically aim towards each other, but while you hold down the Fire key you will be able to adjust your aim by pressing your move up/move down keys. Bullets will not kill you, but will hinder your movement around the court - your forcefield will not protect you from this! Bullets do not affect the bomb in any way.

CONTROLS:

Player 1: WASD to move, G to shoot, Y to use forcefield

Player 2: Arrow keys to move, Page Down to shoot, Page Up to use forcefield

You only play one round at a time and the game will automatically return to the title screen after each round.

Windows only; made in Game Maker 7; .zip includes GM7 file.
