Weekly Freehosting Pick

A while ago I gave the last bastions of the old free web hosts a search for old non-self-conscious KnP games. I went with the big three: Tripod, Angelfire, and Geocities. It was a very exciting expedition! I even ran across mojofltr's old stomping grounds! [Link removed pending approval]

I'll be posting a find from my free-host safari every Monday night. Some of them will be fun classics I've been trying to track down for a while. Some will be just really odd stuff that I honestly didn't expect to ever see. They'll mostly be trainwrecks.

First up is QuakeMaker by KZero! This was a clever little maze game that made me very interested in faking scrolling in KnP years ago. The game is played in a very, very tiny little window. What fascinates me about this game is that the gameplay is most likely a result of bugs in his original idea for his scrolling system. You have to retrieve blocks from a maze, but if you collide with the wall, you cause an "earthquake" which makes all the blocks in the level shift towards you. My guess is that the shifting blocks were originally a bug from the way he moved objects around to scroll them. But it became part of his gameplay instead of being "solved". The idea of game design resulting from limitations in an environment was a strong message in "Racing the Beam", a book a few people here have probably read. Just like the Atari VCS programmers came up with games that played to the strengths of scan-line-graphics, many classic KnP games played to the strengths of the fiddly nature of KnP collision detection.

Next Week: A game starring a very famous game character in his most exciting adventure with KnP clipart ever!

[Re: babycastles: i like this one for babycastles because it doesn't have an end point... each of 3 sections has an exit point to the 'hub' so i think it would work well. HOWEVER, it might not be the best because it's about some of my sexual experiences... although there are no naughty bits and nothing about sex is explicitly noted. i'm not the best judge on that because I KNOW EVERYTHING about this game.]

Note: If you can't run it (this is Windows-only), there's a browser version here. I used GameMaker, which means I'd have to pay a 99$ developer fee to export to Mac, which is shitty, so I don't use GM anymore. I had to reconfigure one of the rooms that used physics for the browser version since HTML5 & Box2D physics don't get along well.

this is my second game! i never posted it here because i didn't know about g.t. at the time, even though i think it's probably my most glorious trainwreck (meaning, it fits this site better than any other game-hosting site). i'm very much interested in body horror and want to make many more games using my body for textures and stuff. also there is nothing x-rated here at all. okay, here's some of the original description:

Made for Strawberry Jam, a game jam hosted by itch.io
https://itch.io/jam/strawberry-jam

This is, more-or-less, an experiment with using GameMaker for the first time.
I have exported a "Flatgame" with Unity the month before; otherwise, I have zero experience with programming.

The theme of Strawberry Jam was to make a "horny" game, so I sort of did that.

Basically, this "game" represents a portion bit of sexual experiences I had. Sometimes, it was great! Occasionally, it has been awful. Often, it's somewhere in between those distinctions. Most of the time, I prefer it solo. My interests have always fluctuated, moreso than most people I have discussed this topic with, especially since I'm more asexual than not.

I had intentions of what means what in this game, but I want everyone to just experience what they think is going on.

All of the visuals are photos of my body[...]

You are a young and ambitious sphere who feels ready to run for the president. Can you get the support of the majority in a country of two strongly opposing factions? Find out in this action puzzle game than only uses dark blue, yellow and magenta colors unless it uses gray. I made this game in two days after spending several days on having good intentions and producing absolutely nothing. Challenge yourself and spend ten minutes on this!

Or five minutes and fifty seconds. If you win the game this fast, you will be better than me.

The Star Festival, and other Winter Excitements

Hey guys! It's been a while. I sorta lost my game-making mojo this month, but I still managed to finish up a pretty short Knytt Stories level. It's called The Star Festival, and it's about a Yuletide Knytt festival suspiciously similar to Christmas. It was originally made for a level competition on the Nifflas forums, but I ran way late with it. No screenshots because I'm feeling lazy.

ALSO: I submitted a game to the 7th Annual New Years Mini-comp, called You Have to Put the Baby New Year in the Champagne Bottle. It's pretty much what you would expect. Hope to see you guys again soon!

hello

for the heck of it, i went ahead and added some retrospective "extra notes" to the descriptions of all my games because i felt like looking back on them. some of those things are real good! others are not. but you can go look at those, if you want, and then go "wow avery why dont you just convert those last three to tgf1 format now, theres no reason to" and then ill go "yes there is, im lazy and i cant be bothered bc theyre all mediocre."

fun times. anyway, i'm still slowly doing video game stuff. both knp game collab projects are in limbo right now, i need to add stuff to them both. im currently making a twine game that stars the owl from holiday runner, which is slowly coming along. considering making a spinoff to rogue shaving pimps set in the same universe bc it fascinated me. twine is nice, by the way. dunno if you know that or not.

if you fancy following my daily escapades of not being productive im over on mastodon, . otherwise im gonna keep laid back here pretending im some kind of legend around here because my ego just wont go away.
