KNPGen v0.1

Announcing KNPGen -- a tool for randomly generating Klik & Play screenshots!

It works like this: First, you need to generate the cache of KNP images to use, so drag a directory full of IMG files onto KNPGen.exe. Once the cache exists, you can just run KNPGen.exe on its own to generate new screenshots using that library. If you run KNPGen.exe on its own without a cache, it will scan the current directory, so you can plunk it in with a Klik & Play game to remix it.

Enjoy!

Timezone Lottery Klik Jam #6

Etc/GMT

The time is right... for making videogames! The Timezone Lottery Klik Jam happens on the first Saturday of every month, at a time chosen randomly by our top-of-the-line numerical hour-choosing machines. This month, it takes place at 4:00 am UTC. Whenever that time rolls around for you, you have two hours to make a game!

How can I possibly make a game in that short a timespan, you gasp? There are many game-making tools available, but the most ludicrous and welcoming of all is Klik & Play. If you want to give K&P a shot, we have a Learning KNP FAQ available, as well as some advice on making it work on modern machines.

Making games is its own reward, but it can be much, much more rewarding when you're doing it with friends. To get the most out of this worldwide internet game jam, come talk with everyone on IRC. It's a great way to share this awesome experience, and get quick help when things aren't going right. Our server is irc.freenode.net, and our channel is #glorioustrainwrecks.

After you've made your game, upload it here!

For more information, check out the N00B FAQ.

Sign up below to get a reminder email the day before the jam!

Adventure Creation Kit

(Sheesh, I should have posted about this months ago.)

ACK is a DOS-era toolkit for making simple Ultima-style RPGs, based on Stuart Smith's seminal Adventure Construction Set. Development stopped for a long time, but the author has recently begun to release new versions, bundled with a copy of DOSBox.

The newest pack-in game, Ultima IV Part 2: Dude, Where's My Avatar?, looks pretty bizarre, but I don't want to play it until I get more familiar with the original Ultima games (don't look at me like that). There is also a tutorial module explaining most of the features.

I had an adventure game planned, but it might be a while before I get back to working on it. I recall a monsters-destroying-city game being in the works, and the author of the program had a decent (albeit years old) historical adventure about a caravan of settlers.

Themed Trainwreck Somedays #3

Tue, Jul 27 2010 04:00 PM
07/27/2010 - 19:00
07/27/2010 - 21:00
Etc/GMT-4

Today is a Someday.

What is a Someday, you must inquire? It is when the one who must do certain things on a Thursday instead does not, and proceeds to not do for several months thereafter. The not doing is what which is the cancer. And the Someday is that which is the cure.

Someday is Sunday. Someday is Wednesday. Someday is Fries Day. Some days are rainy days. Someday is all days.

On the waning of the second half of Someday, July 27th, 7PM to 9PM Eastern, we shall experience the two-hours phenomenon where trains are wrecked. It is known as the Themed Trainwreck Somedays.

However, one must be wary of the trains they are about to wreck, for one mustn't wreck the train the way that any train ought to be wrecked. Instead, one must wreck the train in a very peculiar manner. A manner that follows a theme, if you will. The one theme this manner follows is entitled Single-Button Games.

Buttons are frightening. Buttons are terrifying. Buttons once bit my sister. She became hospitalized for five months.

It is of critical importance that one mustn't include more than a single button in their wrecked trains. The single button may be pressed. The single button may be depressed. The single button may be held in the downard orientation for that matter of time longer than a short period of time. The single button may be not pressed within a period of time longer than a short period of time. However, you shall have no other buttons before the single button.

The tools for wrecking trains shall be found in the place where things are kept. The intercommunication between your other persons who are wrecking trains shall be located on the #glorioustrainwrecks which lies within the irc.freenode.net, and the verbal air through which Mumbles and grumbles are heard. Should one find themselves in a state that involves not understanding the wrecking of trains using the Playing in Addition to the Kliking, the one should press and depress a single button over this arranging of letters.

I cannot give any further utterances in regards to aid that follows in avoiding pressing a greater amount of buttons than that of the single button, so I shall deliver to you the best of regards in your wrecking of trains.

P.S. The finalized trains that have been wrecked should be transported through a single button press and a single button depress through this arranging of letters.
