Klik of the Month Klub #90 "Stocking Stuffer Edition"

Sat, Dec 20 2014 05:00 PM
12/20/2014 - 17:00
12/20/2014 - 19:00
Etc/GMT-7

The theme this month is Winter Holiday themed! Just reskin your favorite Klik game in a fun Winter Holiday style!

You don't even have to "make" a game. Just slap some Christmas midis on it, slap some Kwanzaa iconography on it, slap some dreidels on it, slap some santas on it, slap some elves and stockings and whatever on it, slap some candy canes on it!

No big deal, real easy, really casual, don't worry about it. I know you are all working hard on your Sekret Santas, I get it, no one has time for KotMK this month. I won't even be upset if no one joins this event! I don't care, whatever. It's the holiday season, come on, this will be fun, you'll like this event, it's real quick, pretty easy.

The Klik of the Month Klub meets right here on this very website on the third Saturday of every month at 4pm Pacific Time (taking daylight savings into consideration) for a two hour Klik & Play Showdown. Everyone who participates gets two hours to create something from scratch in Klik & Play. Abusing the stock objects is encouraged. If you really loathe Klik & Play you can use whatever game development platform you want. Two hours is a pretty tight time limit, though, so choose wisely!

Klik & Play is absolutely free to download , and learning it takes minutes, so everyone can get in on the action.

After you've made your game, you should upload it here!

Meme Status

So he has a mullet. And runs funny. And has this slightly cheesy/disturbing grin on his face. Always. And all he does is jog. That's the only animation he was ever given.

But I must digress. How the hell did the Yellow Jogger become a meme around here anyway?

I actually found the Yellow Jogger humorous before I came here, after having played Arf's game "El Loco Dumas". And when I arrived at Glorious Trainwrecks, it appeared to be an injoke here as well. But I don't understand! It's just a freaking sprite.

Or maybe the Yellow Jogger's grin is starting to make me insane.

Inject to Disinfect

Oh no, someone wants to eat an infected burger! Use your telekinetic powers to control the plate so that the burger gets injected with enough disinfectant before the person eats it.

programming injuries

title menu.PNG

I hate drawing. Doing gfx is the worst part of my programming experience. I'm OK at it, it's just time consuming. I can code all day and not be bothered with it, for like 12 hours straight with the occasional bathroom break. But doing this drawing and plotting pixels, AARGH I hate it!!! Just can't stand it. I want a specific look but at times I feel like ripping stuff from other games (and ripping out my hair!)

I just have to stick with it....

My eyes hurt from staring at the screen and my wrist is numb from the mouse. Because I'm not at home base with all my materials (including a drawing pad and pen that I use to make my gfx on and my library of clip art discs!!) it's hard going old skool before I got the fancy equipment. I remember the days using graphics paper and plotting out my pixels that way with my 64 or 100 crayon box by my side. But I'm nearly 30 not 15 years old any more. My patience has gotten thin. Or I need to rebuild my patience? At least I got some brootal death and black metal to rock out to. Back in the day I rocked glam metal, haha!

Posted is my title screen for one of my games, Beyond the Stars. Simple concept (find some aliens and take their picture). I wanted the 'bad kiddie drawing' look but damn it, it's tough! Believe it or not, the title screen is all from clip art discs. The rest of the game features my actual drawings.

Reflecting Paddle

reflectingpaddle.png

This game is very simple. A dispenser releases a finite supply of balls. The longer you bounce the balls, the more points you gain when they vanish off the bottom of the screen. On each bounce, the ball's point value increases by the number of times it has already bounced - so repeatedly bounced balls can, after a while, become very lucrative indeed.

You have 1024 balls and have to get as high a score as you can with them. What's the most profitable way to do so? I'm not sure. Work it out yourself.

Use the mouse to move the paddle.

KotM; KNP or Java Processing? YOU DECIDE!

So i know I spent way too much time whinging about being the only guy not writing stuff in KNP for the Pirate Kart, but still I'd like to ask the (ir)regulars here: assuming I can get to a computer in time for this weekend's KotM, should I do something in Java Processing or Klik N Play?

Both have their pros and cons. I can do more and more interesting stuff in Java, though I haven't yet worked up getting the sound libraries going. KNP is more in the spirit of what everyone's doing, and I'm more like to get the abuse of clip art and sounds going.

(at some point, I'd like to get into trying to build engines more than games. I guess I'm more of a Carmack than a Romero, if you know what I mean, or at least aspire to that.)
