The Overshoe

It sure is wonderful being a Chinese spambot! Fly gracefully through the skies, firing bowling balls at unsuspecting online communities. Don't get too close to the online communities though, or else you'll get stunned. Avoid Jeremy Penner's floating, disembodied head at all costs.

Use the left and right arrow keys to steer. Hold the down arrow key to slow down a bit.

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz (Wii)

First off, sorry for not being a good 'wrecker these days. Coming back in and slurping up the backlog of everything I've missed has been on my Todo list for a few months now.

So, my nomination for most glorious trainwreck of 2006: Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz - this game gets so much right, and so much absolutely terrifyingly wrong. You really get the feeling of "wow, what can we do with this cool controller???" more so than in any other game -- and some of the minigames are just brilliant (especially two that have the player holding the wiimote upright - one as a super brilliant 3D lunar lander, the other as a flightstick.... I wish to god that other games would take the flightstick idea, it's so much more comfortable and cool than the "hold it like a paper airplane" control Wii Sports Resort uses) and other ones are just unplayable, unworkably awful.

And so much of the UI is a mess! The most egregious example is the idiosyncratic "twist" controller on the main menu, where you kind of roll the wiimote like a log in a log rolling contest to move the selector left and right, like an old tv tuner. And then this was the first place I noticed Nintendo was doing itself a huge disservice by ditching the traditional "start=pause" for "+" (which is sometimes a pause) "home" (which can act like a very disruptive pause but never has the menu you're looking for) and "-".

Also in its favor, this game figured out that for party games, people want to - play the games. Mario Party does itself a disservice each generation that adds more and more crap to the "board game" when really it should be just enough framework to get everyone engaged.

Super Monkey Ball 2 was pretty grand as well (not for the main game, which never had a difficulty curve I was willing to deal with) -- cranking that Monkey Target hang-glider game to simultaneous play was genius, monkey fight is supremely satisfying, the dogfight is fairly unique, the race was a good substitute for proper Mario Kart...

Anyway- Banana Blitz. So much energy and enthusiasm, such a low ratio of brilliance to idiocy...

Kilk of The Month Klub #96: Summer Bargain Bin

Sat, Jun 20 2015 01:00 PM

US/Eastern

The Klik of the Month Klub meets right here on this very website on the third Saturday of every month at 4pm Pacific Time (taking daylight savings into consideration) for a two hour Klik & Play Showdown. Everyone who participates gets two hours to create something from scratch in Klik & Play. Abusing the stock objects is encouraged. If you really loathe Klik & Play you can use whatever game development platform you want. Two hours is a pretty tight time limit, though, so choose wisely!

Everyone forgot the Klub! I'll save the day! The theme this month is like... Bargain Bin Summer games... the good video games don't come out in summer... tragic...

Poor Thing Update

screenshot11.PNG

Dear Trainwreckers

As you may have seen I have been screaming for help lately. The situation is under control - my game works in Multimedia Fusion, which means I will be able to export it in a version suitable for 64 bit platforms. So, after a short panic, time to get back to work! Since the beginning of 2015 I have been working on "Poor Thing" about 4 days a week. So you can imagine things are gaining steam again! Many new places, including a secret location I am not authorized to provide screenshots of. Some spooky figures, unnatural goings-on and looots of new ideas!

I attach some places and also a comparison shot of an interior - before and after some redecorating, the second being the level of detail that I mean to implement everywhere else.

I think I am going to continue making the game in KNP because I am so used to it, and animating stuff in MMF makes me rip my hair out! And from time to time I will port it to MMF to see if everything is compatible (for some reason certain things go crazy when ported from KNP to MMF, mainly things anchored to other things). I am also writing a "script" of sorts, as in movie, not as in coding, to keep track of all action in right order and logic. And I made a handy map to see what goes where and what corners are missing. So in other words, full speed ahead!

Wheeee

All the best to you and I will let you know what's up in another 3 months or so!

PongSpar

Game File:

You can't get it past the other guy, who'll knock it back to you at a slightly different angle, but instead touching the ball to get more points. It gets progressively faster, too!
Up and Down arrows to control. Note that you can't change the angle of the ball, but your opponent often will.

I've tried to get it so that the ball doesn't go within a certain range of vertical, too, so hopefully that'll work.

Music is a take on Din Da Da that I came up with earlier today on a whim.
